04.24.2005 | Softball
AUSTIN, Texas -- Iowa State's Jennifer Bigbee laced a two-out single to right field - her second hit of the game - to drive in the game-winning run and snap a 0-0 deadlock in the top of the seventh inning as the Cyclones defeated the No. 3 Texas softball team, 1-0, in Big 12 action at McCombs Field on Saturday. Bigbee drove in pinch runner Amber Wood and gave Iowa State its first-ever victory over the Longhorns in 21 contests.
Iowa State (16-17, 2-11 Big 12) earned its second win in conference play as Texas (34-9, 8-4 Big 12) dropped it second game of the week. Meagan Denny (Crowley, Texas) took the loss for the Horns to move to 6-2 on the season as she surrendered one run on three hits in 7.0 innings of work, striking out eight and walking two.
Cyclones pitcher Alyssa Ransom, a native of Round Rock, Texas, returned home and won her 10th game of the season shutting out the Longhorns. She held the Horns to two hits and struck out two, walking one.
MicKayla Padilla (Cedar Park, Texas) led off the game with a base hit to second base and then in the third Tina Boutelle (Katy, Texas) singled to account for all the offense UT would generate. The Longhorns did have the bases loaded in the third inning with one out, but Ransom forced a fielder's choice to get the lead runner at home and the induced a infield fly to end the threat and get out of the inning unscathed.
Texas will return to the field Tuesday, April 26, in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m., against Texas Tech at McCombs Field, marking the last regular season home date for the Horns. UT then turns around and travels to College Station, Texas, on Wednesday to take on No. 5 Texas A&M in a 7 p.m. game that will be televised live on ESPN2.
