Softball earns three All-Big 12 honors

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Three Texas softball players were voted to All-Big 12 Conference teams, junior Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) earned her third Big 12 Pitcher of the Year honor and seven players earned academic all-conference honors, the league announced at the annual awards banquet on Wednesday afternoon. Awards were voted on by the conference's 10 head coaches.
Osterman earned her third pitcher of the year award and was also voted to the All-Big 12 First Team. Sophomore Megan Willis (Chandler, Ariz.) and freshman MicKayla Padilla (Cedar Park, Texas) were selected to the All-Big 12 Second Team.
Four players earned first team Academic All-Big 12 honors for maintaining a grade point average above 3.21. Senior Alexis Garcia (Covina, Calif.), sophomore Christina Gwyn (Keller, Texas), Melanie Jarrett (Odessa, Texas) and senior Lacy Robinson (Highlands, Texas) all earned first-team honors and were recognized at the banquet. Juniors Tina Boutelle (Katy, Texas), Osterman and Chez Sievers (Mission Viejo, Calif.) all earned second-team all-academic honors for maintaining a GPA between 3.0 and 3.2.
Osterman had a 9-4 record in Big 12 games this season, leading the conference in ERA (0.53), strikeouts (191), opponents' batting average (.113) and shutouts (five).
In conference games, Willis was second on the team with a .268 average and led the team with seven RBI. Padilla led the team in conference batting, connecting for a .314 mark which was ranked 21st among all league players.
Texas A&M's Amanda Scarborough was named Big 12 Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, Oklahoma's Heather Scaglione was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and A&M's Jo Evans was voted Big 12 Coach of the Year.
The sixth-ranked and third-seeded Longhorns (38-11, 11-6 Big 12) begin play at the annual Big 12 Tournament on Thursday, May 12, when they take on sixth-seeded Kansas (30-20, 9-8 Big 12) at 11 a.m. at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
