Horns score three, Osterman no-hits Nebraska at Big 12 Softball Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Texas scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, all Cat Osterman (Houston, Texas) needed to make her 13th-career no-hitter stand as the third-seeded Longhorns defeated seventh-seeded Nebraska, 3-0, in the second round of the Big 12 Softball Tournament at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium on Thursday evening.
With the win, Osterman tossed her fourth no-hitter of the season, threw her 50th-career shutout, pushed her career record in the Big 12 Tournament to 9-0 and continued her scoreless streak at the annual event to 52.0 innings that stands since the 2002 season. She has a career ERA of 0.00 at the conference's championship event.
Tina Boutelle (Katy, Texas) paced the UT offense, going 2-for-3 with one run scored, while the top three batters went a combined 4-for-9 and scored all three runs and drove in two.
Texas (40-11) advanced in the winners' bracket of the Big 12 Tournament and is one of two undefeated teams - with fourth-seeded Baylor - that remain in the tournament with 2-0 records. The Longhorns will face the winner of the No. 1 seed Texas A&M/No. 2 seed Oklahoma elimination game on Friday evening at 5 p.m. Both teams have 1-1 records. Nebraska (35-20) will play Missouri in an elimination game on Friday afternoon.
In the first inning, MicKayla Padilla (Cedar Park, Texas) led off with a first-pitch slap single before Boutelle pushed her to third with a single through the right side. Chez Sievers (Mission Viejo, Calif.) then stepped up and ripped her third triple of the season to right center to plate both runners. After a strikeout, Megan Willis (Chandler, Ariz.) singled through the right side to plate Sievers and round out the scoring.
UT had seven hits in the game and pushed its record against Nebraska this season to 3-0.
Osterman (22-6) had 14 strikeouts - including three in the first inning on nine pitches - while walking two in the complete game. Ashley DeBuhr (23-18) took the loss, going 3.0 innings while allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits while striking out four and walking none. Jordan Keen entered in the fourth and allowed two hits with one strikeout and two walks in the relief effort.
Texas' three runs in the first inning snapped Nebraska's 23.0-inning scoreless streak that dated back to the 2004 tournament. The Cornhuskers are the defending champions of the conference tournament.
