Three Longhorns earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI At-Large recognition

AUSTIN, Texas -- Three University of Texas student-athletes were selected Thursday to the 2004-05 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI First Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in the "At-Large" (Multi sports) category. The trio of Longhorns were: senior rower Karen Glazebrook (St. Catharines, Ontario), junior men's swimmer David Kahn (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and senior women's swimmer Alisa Schuknecht (Bend, Ore.). All First-Team recipients move on to the National Academic All-America ballot where three national teams (First, Second and Third) will be selected in the At-Large category.
The award marks the second overall and second in as many years for Schuknecht, who earned Academic All-District VI as well as Academic All-America recognition in 2003-04. The CoSIDA At-Large All-Academic honor is among the most difficult to earn, based on the fact that there are student-athletes from 13 different sports competing for 20 spots (10 First Team, 10 Second Team) in each district. Texas participates in four of those 13 sports - golf, rowing (crew), swimming/diving and tennis. This season, due to ties in the women's balloting, there were 12 student-athletes on the first team and eight on the second team. Only the first-team honorees advance to the national ballot.
Glazebrook was instrumental in guiding UT's first varsity eight boat to the school's first two appearances at the NCAA Championships and is a three-time National Scholar-Athlete selection of the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) as well as a two-time Rowing Academic team MVP and two-time CRCA All-South Region Selection. Glazebrook boasts a GPA of 3.91 while double majoring in kinesiology and psychology and will continue her studies in a health behavior program, which focuses on research in exercise, disease prevention and health promotion at the University of Saskatchewan.
Kahn, a biology major who carries a 3.87 GPA, earned the first All-America honor of his career after placing 16th in the 200-yard individual medley as UT placed seventh at the 2005 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships shortly after the Longhorns earned their 26th straight Big 12 Conference Championship.
Schuknecht, a nutrition major who boasts a GPA of 3.91, helped guide the Longhorns to a sixth-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships as well as to their seventh consecutive Big 12 Conference Championship. She is a two-time Big 12 Champion in the 400-yard individual medley (2002 and '05) and a two-time All-America Honorable Mention in that event. Schuknecht earned Academic All-Big 12 First-Team honors in each of her four years at Texas.
District VI encompasses universities from the states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
Sports information directors at each college and university nominate worthy student-athletes. The selection criteria is as follows: a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, hold an overall grade-point-average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.0 scale) and reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
Created in 1952 by CoSIDA, the Academic All-America Teams Program is the premier nation-wide scholar-athlete awards program. A total of 12 All-America teams (six men, six women) are named each year at the University (Division I) and College (Divisions II, III and NAIA) levels.
