WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -- Sophomore Kelsey Carpenter scored a pair of first-half goals to lead Texas to a 2-1 victory over No. 21 Wake Forest in front of 643 fans during a 2005 exhibition match at W. Dennie Spry Stadium on Friday, Aug. 19.
A little over five minutes into the contest, Carpenter (Allen, Texas) put the Longhorns in front 1-0 as she settled a service that bounced over the Wake Forest back line and chipped a shot over the keeper and into the goal. Two minutes later, the sophomore forward struck again by stealing the ball from the WFU defense and drilling a shot inside the far post to stake Texas to a 2-0 advantage. The UT defense, meanwhile, held strong as starting goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) turned aside six shots, including a breakaway chance late in the first period, to preserve the two-goal lead heading into the intermission.
In the second half, the Demon Deacons cut the lead in half when Amanda Lebo took a cross from the right side set up by the tandem of Sarah Kossey and Jayme Lieg Cargnoni and bent a shot around goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) at 65:54. While Wake Forest continued to apply pressure by outshooting the Horns by a 10-1 margin, the Texas defense withstood the charge to stay in front. Pfenninger, who made six saves over her 45 minutes of action, then turned away a point-blank chance off an indirect kick from eight yards out with 13 minutes remaining to help seal the one-goal win.
"We got a good look at what this team can do against quality competition tonight," UT head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "The team played extremely well in goal, was solid in the back and opportunistic up front. That is a recipe for winning."
While Carpenter paced the Horns' offense by scoring on both of her shots, the Demon Deacon's attack was paced by midfielder Melanie Schneider, who collected a match-high four shots.
Up next, the Longhorns wrap up their exhibition season with a 6 p.m. Central match at UNC-Greensboro on Sunday, Aug. 21.
