GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Using a defensive effort that limited the Spartans to three shots and receiving a second-half score from freshman Erin Davis, Texas earned a 1-0 victory over UNC-Greensboro in front of 303 fans during a 2005 exhibition match at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 21.
With the victory, the Longhorns complete their two-game exhibition match schedule with an unblemished 2-0 mark following their 2-1 win over Wake Forest on Friday, Aug. 19.
Although the Longhorns outshot the Spartans by an 8-2 margin in first half, the game remained in a scoreless deadlock heading into the intermission. While Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) for Texas and Jennifer Stillman for UNCG made two and four saves, respectively, in goal during that first period of play, the Horns had quality scoring chances by Davis (Yardley, Pa.), Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) and Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) turned aside to keep the match at 0-0.
Less than 10 minutes into the second period, Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) crossed a ball from the left flank across the Spartans' goal line that Davis pulled away from a defender and slid into the back of the net from six yards out for a 1-0 UT lead. From there, the Texas offense kept up its pressure by firing four more shots during the half while the defense limited UNCG to only one shot in order to preserve the shutout victory.
"It was good to finish this trip with two wins against quality opponents," UT head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "Our defense continued to play extremely well and again gave us a chance to win the game. If our team continues to play solid defense and is opportunistic up front, we can be successful this year. While we still have some areas to improve on, we are looking forward to starting the season next Friday."
Headlining the Longhorns' offense on the evening was Carpenter, who fired a match-best four of UT's 13 shots, while the Spartans' had three different players account for their three shots during the contest.
The Longhorns will now return home for their 2005 regular-season opener on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Central against SMU at Myers Stadium. To order tickets, call by phone at (512) 471-3333 or 1-800-982-BEVO or log onto TexasBoxOffice.com.
