Schmit leads Soccer to 2-0 victory over Auburn

AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior midfielder Carrie Schmit scored one goal and added an assist for a career-high three points as the Texas soccer team defeated Auburn, 2-0, in front of 775 fans at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 28. The victory pushed the Longhorns' school record home winning streak to 14 games.
Texas (2-0) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when freshman defender Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored her first career goal off a corner kick. Freshman forward Erin Davis (Yardley, Pa.) served the ball from the right side where Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) headed the ball down to Moore, who slotted the ball in the low left corner for the score. Auburn (0-2) would try to counter by firing eight shots, including three on goal in the first period of play, but the UT defense and starting goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) managed to keep the one-goal advantage in tact heading into the halftime intermission.
The Tigers again pressed their attack in the second half, but the Longhorns managed to add an insurance tally in the 55th minute to jump on top 2-0. Schmit scored the Horns' second goal off another corner situation when she headed Davis' serve into the lower left side of the net past Auburn keeper Allison Whitworth. While the Tigers continued their attack and managed to hit two posts in the half, goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) posted three saves as UT held off Auburn's chances in the final minutes to preserve the shutout victory. The Longhorns tallied their second shutout in as many outings while Hall, who made three saves on the night over 45 minutes of action, picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the year, while Auburn starting goalkeeper Anna Fiser shouldered the loss.
Although Auburn outshot Texas, 20-17, UT's Moore led all players with three shots on goal. Of note, Davis also tallied a pair of assists for a two-point evening to pace the Longhorns attack.
Texas returns to action on Friday, Sept. 2 when the Horns travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on Michigan, before making their way to East Lansing, Mich., on Sunday, Sept. 4, to take on Michigan State. Friday's game is set for a 6 p.m. Central kickoff, while Sunday's tilt will start at 3 p.m. Central.
