Soccer drops tough 3-2 decision to Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- Despite a late offensive surge, the Longhorns incurred their first loss of the season as Michigan pulled out a 3-2 victory over Texas in front of 1,817 fans at U-M Soccer Field on Friday, Sept. 2.
With the decision, UT drops to 2-1 on the year while the Wolverines improve to 1-0-1.
Michigan jumped on top 1-0 in the first two minutes of play as forward Melissa Dobbyn took a pass from Katelin Spencer and Judy Coffman and fired a shot from 18 yards out that found the back of the UT net just inside the near post. A little over 11 minutes later, Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) netted her second goal in three games to tie the score at 1-1 as she redirected a clearance inside the box with a header past MU goalkeeper Megan Tuura. Although, the Wolverines would manage to outshoot the Horns by a 10-6 margin in the first period, the score remained deadlocked heading into the intermission.
In the second half, Dobbyn crossed a ball in front of the UT net that Therese Heaton laced from 12 yards out and into the upper left corner to reclaim the lead for Michigan at 2-1 in the 48th minute of play. Continuing to fight back, the Horns worked to again knot the score when Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) played a pass off of a free kick out wide to Julie Gailey (San Ramon, Calif.) who placed a service in front of the MU goal where Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas) half-volleyed the ball into the net at 70:05. The Horns then looked to grab their first lead of the match a few minutes later when they placed two shots on goal, including a chance from freshman Jill Gilbeau (San Diego, Calif.) from in close, but Tuura made a save and had her defense come up big to keep the contest tied at 2-2.
In the 78th minute, Michigan struck again as Danelle Underwood re-directed a service from Jamie Artsis into the far left corner of the UT goal to give the Wolverines a 3-2 advantage. Although the Longhorns would put together another offensive charge over the final minutes in which they would hit the post and have two balls cleared off the Michigan goal line, the Wolverines held on for the victory. While Tuura earned the win with a five-save effort for MU, Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) shouldered the loss for Texas after relieving starter Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) in the second half and combining with Hall to amass six stops on the evening.
"We played like a young team tonight," Texas head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "You can expect matches like this with such a young group, you just hope that they don't happen very often. It's tough to win on the road, but it is something we have to learn to do. Hopefully, we can take the right steps in that direction come Sunday."
Pacing the Texas offense were Carpenter, who scored her team-leading second goal of the season, and Fite, who came up with her sixth career goal while tallying a team-best five shots. The Wolverines, meanwhile, were led by Dobbyn who not collected three points with a goal and an assist, but also fired a match-high nine shots.
Up next, the Longhorns head to East Lansing, Mich., to face the Spartans of Michigan State in a 3 p.m. Central contest on Sunday, Sept. 4.
