TOLEDO, Ohio -- The No. 12 ranked University of Texas men's golf team is in second place of the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational after two rounds of competition on Monday in Toledo, Ohio. The Longhorns sit alone in second place and only 10 strokes off the lead after firing a first-round 305 and tournament-low 286 in their second round.
The Longhorns started the 36-hole marathon sitting in 12th place after the first 18 holes, but leapfrogged into second after Matt Mills and Kevin Shultz fired second rounds scores of 70 and 72, respectively. Mills currently sits in a tie for sixth place with a 36-hole total of 145.
Jhonattan Vegas rebounded from a first round nine-over par 80, to record a two-under par 69, a team low for the tournament. Schultz is currently tied for 13th with a two-round total of 147 and Vegas is tied for 19th with a 149.
"Our guys knew this was going to be tough and they are rising to the challenge," said head coach John Fields. "The 36 hole format can be draining, because there isn't a break and the guys just have to stay the course and they found it within themselves to improve."
All five members of the UT squad improved with their second rounds scores. Farren Keenan went 76 then 75 on the day, while Jace Moore shot rounds of 79 and 77.
"The guys didn't quit and they came back strong after struggling early," said Fields. "Schultz, Vegas and Mills all came through strong in their second runs and it helped us develop a lot of momentum going into tomorrow's final round."
No. 11 Southern California opened Day 1 with a team score of 581 to take the lead. Coastal Carolina sits in third with 592, while No. 6 ranked Florida is fourth and host Toledo rounds out the top five with scores of 593 and 595, respectively.
Joshua Wooding leads the tournament with a one-under par 141, followed by his USC teammate Taylor wood at even par, 142. Justin Hull of Toledo sits in third with one-over par 143 and Moises Cobo of Coastal Carolina and Jon Curran of Vanderbilt are tied for fourth with identical 144s.
The Longhorns will play their final round of 18 holes Tuesday, and will be paired with USC and Coastal Carolina for their last run at the course.
