No. 21 Soccer rallies from behind for 2-1 win over Rice

AUSTIN, Texas -- Outshooting the Owls by a 23-9 margin, the Longhorns scored a pair of unanswered goals, including the eventual game-winner by junior Karen Haight, to overcome an early 1-0 deficit as No. 21 Texas earned a 2-1 win over Rice in front of 848 fans at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 18.
With the victory, the Longhorns improved their record to 3-3-1 on the year, while Rice fell to 4-4-0. Additionally, with the win, UT has now won 15 of its last 16 games at Myers Stadium dating back to 2004.
The Owls jumped in front 1-0 during the eighth minute of action as Erin Droeger fired a free kick into the UT box that Samantha Conn redirected inside the right post from eight yards out on a header. Almost 12 minutes later, Texas capitalized on a free kick of its own from about 23 yards outside the penalty area as freshman defender Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) fired a low, driven kick inside the far post to knot the match at 1-1. While both sides then produced point-blank opportunities during the later minutes of the first period, goalkeepers Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) for Texas and Adriene Giese for Rice managed to post two and three saves, respectively, to keep the game tied at intermission.
In the second half, Texas went on the attack from the outset and amassed 12 shots during the period. One of those shots came off the foot of Haight (Beaverton, Ore.) at 59:43 and found the back of the net to stake the Horns to a 2-1 advantage. Freshman Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) set up the goal off a corner kick that she delivered inside the six. When Logterman's cross was deflected to the outside corner of the Rice box, Haight lofted a shot just over Giese's reach and under the cross bar for her first goal of the year. While the Owls would force four corners during the final minutes of regulation and put pressure on the Texas defense, the Longhorns were up to the task and held on for the one goal victory. Picking up the win in goal for UT was freshman Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas), who played the entire second half and faced three shots en route to notching her first career victory, while Giese shouldered the loss despite tallying four saves.
Paving the way for the Texas offense was the defensive line, which accounted for all five of the club's points on the evening, and forward Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas), who fired a match-best seven shots on the evening. Rice, meanwhile, had its attack led by Conn, who scored the Owl's lone goal and collected a team-high three shots on the night.
Up next, the Longhorns open Big 12 Conference action with a 7 p.m. Central match at Oklahoma State on Friday, Sept. 23.
