Petrucelli reaches 100th win at UT as No. 10 Soccer tops Missouri, 1-0

AUSTIN, Texas -- UT head coach Chris Petrucelli became the first Longhorns soccer coach to win 100 matches on the Forty Acres, as the No. 10 Texas Longhorns blanked Missouri, 1-0, on Friday, Oct. 20, at Mike Myers Stadium. Senior Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) scored the goal in the 40th minute of the game.
The Longhorns moved to 13-3-1 overall and are now 5-1-1 in Big 12 play. The Tigers fall to 9-8-0 and 1-7-0 in the league in front of the crowd of 899 fans.
"A number of people are involved in those wins - players, assistant coaches and staff," said Petrucelli of his 100th win at Texas. "I am probably more focused on getting 101 right now but it is definitely nice. The number goes on the coach's record, especially in our sport, but the players have a lot more to do with it than the coaches."
Petrucelli is the first coach in Texas women's soccer history to win 100 games. He records his 100th win at Texas against Missouri in his eighth season in the Lone Star state after nine seasons with Notre Dame. His overall record is now 275-77-17 in 16 years as a head coach.
Texas' only goal of the game found the back of the net forty minutes, fourteen seconds into the first half. Sophomore Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) took the corner kick from the right side, sending her teammates into action after placing the ball near the posts. Texas defender Karen Haight (Beaverton, Ore.) gained possession of the ball after it cleared out by the MU defense. Seeing an opportunity to score, Haight took the shot, but it was blocked by a Tiger defender. The deflection landed in front of Schmit, who kicked the ball into the right side of the net, just wide of the keeper.
"I saw it was right in front of the goal," said Schmit in describing the play leading up to her two points. "I just settled it, took the touch, hit it with my left, and it slowly went in."
"Carrie Schmit scores goals, and she did it again," said Coach Petrculli of his the fourth-year captain.
The goal is the midfielder's sixth for the season and her second game-winning goal of the year.
"I want to come through in big games and when the team is having a little trouble scoring," said Schmit. "I am glad that I was the person to score, but I am always trying to score no matter what game we are in, to help my team win."
In UT's 13 victories this year, Texas has registered the first goal of the match seven times. The Longhorns also scored first in their tie against Oklahoma.
The Longhorns have kept Missouri off the scoreboard in four of the nine meetings in all-time history. UT owns a 9-3-1 record against the Tigers. MU played a ranked Texas squad in 2001 and 2002 in which third-ranked Texas outscored Missouri 2-1 in overtime Oct. 27, 2002, and No. 12 Texas 1-0, Oct. 19, 2001.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) recorded her 20th win of her short career. The victory over the Tigers of the season places her second on the all-time list for the most goalkeeper wins in a single season (11) and fourth in career wins (20) in Texas history.
Pfenninger had three saves in 90 minutes and her fifth shutout of the year.
Texas took 22 shots with 10 attempts on goal.
MU's goalkeeper Mallory Forst registered nine saves and allowed one goal in the game. The Tigers recorded five shots with three aimed at the Texas goal.
Despite being 5-0 on the road in the Big 12, the win is Texas' first conference victory at Myers this season. The only two home league contests were a 1-0 loss to Oklahoma State on Sept. 29, and a 3-3 tie with Oklahoma on Oct. 1.
Texas will face Big 12 opponent Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 22, at noon (Central) at Mike A. Myers in Austin, Texas. The game is the final match before the Longhorns face Texas A&M in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown.
