No. 8 Volleyball sweeps Colorado, 3-0

BOULDER, Colo. -- Freshmen Ashley Engle and Destinee Hooker combine for 29 kills to lead No. 8 Texas to a 3-0 (30-21, 32-30, 30-22) sweep of Colorado, Saturday night at the Coors Event Center. Engle hammered out a team-high 15 kills on .385 hitting and Hooker connected for 14 kills and posted a .520 attack mark in the Horns three-game victory.
Texas (14-5, 6-3 Big 12) grabbed a 5-1 lead early in game one, using a pair of Engle kills to take command of the game from the start. The Horns added to their lead with a second 4-0 run that moved the tally to 10-4 and took hold of the game when they ran off seven straight points at the 15-11 mark to take a commanding 21-11 advantage. During the run Engle recorded four of her seven game-one kills. Texas stretched the lead to 11 on a Lauren Paolini kill at the 27-16 mark, and fought off a late Colorado rally to take game one 30-21.
In game two the Horns fell behind quickly and Colorado (12-8, 8-5 Big 12) took advantage, leading until the 20-20 mark when Hooker connected for two straight kills to even the score. Texas then put together a 4-0 run, taking its first lead of the match on a Colorado error that pushed the lead to 24-22 on a kill by Dariam Acevedo. The Buffs rallied back to tie the match, but they would never regain the lead, as Hooker forced game point with a kill at the 29-28 mark. Texas twice squandered game point with service errors, but back-to-back kills by Hooker and Jennifer Todd closed out the game with UT winning, 32-30.
The Longhorns grabbed the lead to start game three and they would never look back, using a 4-0 run paced by an Engle kill and block assist to push the Horns advantage to 10-5. A 4-1 run highlighted by two Hooker kills and an Engle ace increased the margin to 17-9 and three late kills by Todd pushed the gap to nine, with UT taking a 23-14 lead. Three more kills by Hooker moved the Texas edge to 28-21 and Engle's team-high 15th kill forced match point. Amber Sutherland's match-high 16th kill kept the Buffs alive at the 29-22 mark, but a CU service error closed out the match with the Horns on top 30-22.
Engle led the Longhorns attack on the night, recording 15 kills on .385 hitting, while Hooker posted 14 kills and a .520 attack mark. Todd joined the freshmen duo in double figures with 10 kills on .533 hitting and seven total blocks. Acevedo anchored the UT defense with a team-high 10 digs, while junior setter Michelle Moriarty tallied 48 assists and four digs on the night.
No. 8 Texas returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 1 when they play host to Kansas. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. and all fans who donate a food item will receive free general admission.
