Longhorns honored at Baseball Awards Banquet

AUSTIN, Texas -- Former University of Texas standouts Carson Kainer, Kyle McCulloch and Drew Stubbs were honored at the 2006 Longhorns Baseball Awards Banquet at the Lone Star Room of the Erwin Center on Sunday. Kainer and Stubbs were tabbed the Co-Most Valuable Players and Kyle McCulloch was named the Most Valuable Pitcher at the annual awards banquet.
A 2006 All-American who was also recognized as the Big 12 Co-Player of the Year, Stubbs batted .342 overall while ranking among the top 10 league players in runs (65), hits (83), home runs (12), RBI (58), steals (26), total bases (141), walks (41), on-base percentage (.439) and slugging (.580). Kainer, meanwhile, led Texas' regular starters in overall batting (.364) and RBI (66) while pacing the conference with 25 doubles en route to earning second-team All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region honors. Both players were drafted by and signed pro contracts with the Cincinnati Reds during the offseason.
McCulloch paced the Longhorns' pitching staff with an 8-5 record, 3.61 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 109.2 innings. He was UT's leader in wins (8), starts (18), innings (109.2) and strikeouts (82). McCulloch was drafted and signed by the Chicago White Sox.
Three other team awards were handed out during the banquet. Kainer received the Team Captain Award. Sophomore catcher Preston Clark earned the Lowe's Most Improved Player Award. Graduating outfielder Hunter Harris was granted the Teammate of the Year Award by head coach Augie Garrido.
The Longhorns also introduced three new Student Services Academic Accomplishment Awards. Clark earned the Student Services Most Improved Award, Stubbs was bestowed the Academic Achievement Award and Drew Bishop garnered the Longhorn Academic Spirit Award.
The 2006 Longhorns posted a 41-21 mark and won the Big 12 regular-season title with a 19-7 record.
