02.15.2006 | Softball
AUSTIN, Texas -- Tina Boutelle book-ended Wednesday's doubleheader against Sam Houston with home runs, hitting a lead-off bomb in the first game and following it up with a walk-off two-run round-tripper to end the nightcap.
On the night, Boutelle was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI as the fifth-ranked Texas softball team swept the Bearkats, 2-0 and 3-1, at McCombs Field in the Horns' home opener.
Desiree Williams went 3-for-3 in the second game, tying a career-high hitting effort.
Cat Osterman tossed her fourth shutout in as many outings to take the win in the first game, tying her own UT school record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game with 19. Meagan Denny earned the win in the second game, throwing her third complete game of the season with eight strikeouts and an intentional walk.
With the sweep, Texas (6-1) improved to 8-1 all-time against Sam Houston (4-2), and has won the last eight meetings between the two schools.

Game 1: Texas 2, Sam Houston 0
Boutelle led off the game with a powerful start, sending an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence for her second home run of the season. The Longhorns tacked on another run in the third inning when Boutelle came around again. She drew a one-out walk, stole second and then on her steal of third, Sam Houston catcher Kara Reeves sent a throw into left field, allowing Boutelle to come home. Osterman (4-0) then took over, and after mowing down the first nine batters, struck out a total of 19, tying her own school record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game. Osterman allowed two hits - a lead-off double in the top of the fourth and a two-out single in the top of the seventh - while not issuing a walk in her fourth shutout in as many outings this season and the 60th of her career. Megan Willis had the second of UT's two hits, when she led off the fifth with a blooper into right field. Boutelle's two stolen bases increased her season total to four.
Game 2: Texas 3, Sam Houston 1
After UT fell behind 1-0 in the third inning after a Denny wildpitch brought in Lauren Boone from third, Williams knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left center. It was her second homer of the season and the seventh of her career. The Longhorns got out of a jam in the top of the seventh when Sarah Parich led off the inning with a single back up the middle. After Parich stole second, she moved to third on Megan Beard's groundout. After Denny intentionally walked Boone, Stephanie Mosley popped up to Kelly Melone at third to end the inning, setting up Boutelle's heroics in the bottom of the frame. MicKayla Padilla slapped a double to shallow left and two batters later, Boutelle took her first pitch over the left center fence to push Texas' winning streak to four games. Denny (2-1) scattered five hits and surrendered one unearned run while striking out eight with one walk.
