Softball defeats Texas Tech in first game of rain-shortened doubleheader

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The No. 2 ranked Texas softball team won the first game, 6-0, of a Big 12 conference doubleheader in Lubbock, Texas against Texas Tech on Thursday April 20 at Rocky Johnson Field. The Longhorns were unable to complete Game 2 due to rain and lightning. The win moves UT to 44-4 overall and to 10-1 in the Big 12, while Texas Tech drops to 18-29, 4-8.
Senior All-American Cat Osterman (28-1) pitched the first game for her second consecutive shutout and sixth one-hitter of the season. The Houston, Texas native finished with 15 strikeouts and one hit with 22 batters faced in her 24th complete game of the season.
Texas Tech recorded its only hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth, breaking Osterman's streak of 12 consecutive hitless innings. She has now denied an opponent from scoring a run in 15 consecutive innings since a home run the sixth against Oklahoma on April 14 in Norman, Okla.
The Longhorns started the scoring early with two hits and two runs in the top of the first. Senior Chez Sievers brought two runners, seniors Tina Boutelle and Amber Hall, home with a double to left field for her 11th and 12th RBI of the season.
Sophomore Desiree Williams hit her team leading 11th home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning. She finished the game with one hit on three trips. She is currently hitting .500 when leading off the inning for UT with 17 hits in 34 at bats.
The second game was played until the bottom of the fourth inning and then called at 10 p.m. by officials to due weather and playing conditions.
Texas continues its road trip on Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23, with a weekend series in Lawrence, Kansas. The Longhorns will face Kansas at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and then again at noon on Sunday in another Big 12 series.
