PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Texas' distance-medley relay team made history for the second time this month Friday when it ran a school-record time to claim UT's first ever victory in the event at the 112th Penn Relays Carnival at the University of Pennsylvania's historic Franklin Field. The win capped an outstanding first day for the Longhorns, which included several top-five finishes.
The Longhorn quartet of sophomores Jake Morse (Arlington, Texas), Joseph Davis (San Antonio, Texas), Kyle Miller (Katy, Texas) and Leonel Manzano (Marble Falls, Texas) captured UT's first distance-medley relay at the Penn Relays in 9:33.10, breaking the 17-year-old school mark of 9:34.86 set by Harry Green, Winthrop Graham, Greg Fuller and Greg Cannada at the 1989 Penn Relays.
Earlier this month, the Longhorns posted their first win in the distance-medley relay at the Texas Relays since 1948 when the team of senior Ryan Ponsonby (Denton, Texas), Davis, Miller and Manzano clocked 9:48.56 to take top honors.
Senior Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas) captured the discus' championship division with a personal-best mark of 193-6 (59.60m), good for a NCAA regional-qualifying mark. The toss ranks Robison fifth on UT's all-time list of top discus performances. Notably, Robison defeated the nation's No. 3 discus thrower, Vikas Gowda of North Carolina. Sophomore Derek Randall (Beeville, Texas) took fifth with a toss of 181-3 (55.27m).
Robison also recorded a personal best and a NCAA regional qualifier in the shot put with a second-place mark of 64-0 (19.51m), finishing behind only Florida State's Garrett Johnson, the 2006 NCAA indoor shot put champion.
Texas' 4x200-meter relay team posted a qualifying time to advance to Saturday's final. Seniors Quincy Boles (Harker Heights, Texas), Trey Hardee (Birmingham, Ala.), freshman Jamaal Charles (Port Arthur, Texas) and senior Trey Griffin (Lockhart, Texas) reached the finals with a fourth-place preliminary time of 1:23.26.
