AUSTIN, Texas -- With Nebraska losing for the third time in three days to Baylor on Sunday, May 14, The University of Texas baseball team clinched the 2006 Big 12 Conference Championship.
The Longhorns' (38-15, 19-4 Big 12) title marks their third Big 12 Conference crown since the inception of the league in 1997 and their first such championship since 2004. Additionally, the league title is UT's 73rd conference crown overall and the 21st for UT head coach Augie Garrido - including his third since arriving on the Forty Acres in 1997.
While both Texas and Nebraska (37-12, 16-8 Big 12) each have one more weekend series left in conference play to complete the 2006 regular season, the Huskers cannot catch the Horns, who now hold a 3.5-game lead with three contests to play.
"The Big 12 is one of the premiere conferences in the country and to win the championship is a difficult task," said Garrido. "Our team battled hard to overcome numerous adversities in order to come together and this a reward for the changes they have made and the leadership that has developed. We now have to focus on completing the regular season and getting ready for postseason play while continuing to develop in order to handle the challenges that lie ahead."
Up next, the fourth-ranked Longhorns travel to Columbia, Mo., to open their final conference series of the year against the Missouri Tigers on Friday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. Central.
