Longhorns even series behind batterymates’ standout efforts
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Carson Tinney left the yard twice and Luke Harrison held South Carolina quiet to lead No. 2 Texas to a 5-3 victory at Founders Park on Friday night.
Tinney mounted his fifth career multi-homer performance, as the Longhorns (25-5, 8-3 SEC) evened the series with the Gamecocks (15-17, 2-9 SEC).
The junior hammered the fourth pitch of the evening into the left-field bleachers before bookending the offense with a 112-mph pull-side laser in the ninth.
Tinney's ninth home run of the year followed Ethan Mendoza's 405-foot no-doubter over the Texas bullpen in left. The consecutive solo shots marked the second time that the Longhorns have launched back-to-back homers this season.
Meanwhile, Harrison (4-0) allowed just one hit across 5 2/3 innings in the winning effort.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound left-hander set down the first 12 Gamecocks in a row before issuing a leadoff walk in the fourth. After bouncing back with a punchout, Harrison yielded a two-run blast to Luke Yuhasz.
Overall, he retired 17 of the 20 batters he faced.
Brett Crossland, Haiden Leffew and Sam Cozart (3) combined to limit South Carolina to one run on three hits the rest of the way. The trio teamed up to notch the final eight outs via strikeout.
While Texas delivered three home runs, the Longhorns also utilized small ball to tack on a pair in the second.
With a runner on third and one out, Maddox Monsour laid down a safety squeeze. Reliever Brandon Stone fielded the bunt in front of the mound, but his throw sailed up the line to move both runners into scoring position.
The very next pitch, Mendoza pushed a bunt toward first base and beat the Gamecocks to the bag for an RBI single.
In the victory, Texas outhit South Carolina, 13-4.
The Longhorns will look to take the series on Saturday. The rubber game is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT / 2 p.m. ET at Founders Park.
