Texas and the NFL Draft: By the numbers
07.17.2006 | Football
1: Orban "Spec" Sanders was UT's first-ever first-round draft selection in 1942 (No. 6 overall by the Washington Redskins).
2: Texas had two first-round selections in 2006 with QB Vince Young and S Michael Huff. RB Cedric Benson and LB Derrick Johnson both were first-round selections in the 2005 NFL Draft, as were WR Roy Williams and DT Marcus Tubbs in 2004. That marks the first time in Longhorn history that the program has had a pair of first-round picks in three consecutive years and the third time in back-to-back years (2002: CB Quentin Jammer/OT Mike Williams; 2001: OT Leonard/DT Casey Hampton).
2: Texas had two receivers drafted in the 2004 NFL Draft, Roy Williams and Sloan Thomas (7th round/Houston Texans). That marks the first time since the draft was reduced to seven rounds in 1993 and just the third time since the mid-1950s that the Horns have had a receiving duo drafted in the same year. Texas had two receivers picked in 1991 (Keith Cash/7th round/Washington Redskins and Johnny Walker/8th round/Green Bay Packers) and 1987 (Everett Gay/5th Round/Dallas Cowboys and Laron Brown 11th round/Washington Redskins).
2: CB Cedric Griffin and S Michael Huff are the first Longhorn DB duo to be drafted in the same year since 1997 when Bryant Westbrook was chosen by the Detroit Lions in the first round and Taje Allen was picked by the Saint Louis Rams in the fifth round.
2: David Thomas became the second Longhorn TE drafted in as many years, following Bo Scaife last year who was chosen by the Tennessee Titans. Prior to that, the last Texas TE drafted was Pat Fitzgerald in 1997 by the Buffalo Bills.
3: QB Vince Young and S Michael Huff became the third Longhorn duo in school history to be selected in the top 10, joining CB Quentin Jammer and OT Mike Williams in 2002, and QB Bobby Layne and E Max Bumgardner in 1948.
3: Cedric Benson was part of an NFL Draft record three running backs selected in the first five picks in 2005.
3: Number of Texas players that have been the first overall selection of the NFL Draft - Earl Campbell, RB, Houston Oilers (1978); Tommy Nobis, LB, Atlanta Falcons (1966); Kenneth Sims, DE, New England Patriots (1982).
3: QB Vince Young became the third player in UT history to be selected with the third overall pick, joining Bobby Layne from 1948 and Jerry Sisemore in 1973. Three Longhorns have been picked first overall and two have been chosen second.
4: Jonathan Scott became the fourth Longhorn offensive lineman drafted in the past six years with the last being Derrick Dockery, who was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the third round of the 2003 draft.
4: OT Jonathan Scott is the fourth Texas player drafted by the Detroit Lions in the last six years. He joins WR Roy Williams (2004, first round), DE Cory Redding (2003, third round), and DT Shaun Rogers (2001, second round).
4: RB Cedric Benson (4th pick/Chicago Bears) and LB Derrick Johnson (15th pick/Kansas City Chiefs) were both selected in the first-round of the 2005 Draft. That marked the fourth time in five years and eighth time overall that UT has had two players selected in the first-round of a draft.
5: S Michael Huff and CB Cedric Griffin are the fourth and fifth Texas DBs selected in the last five years, joining Nathan Vasher (2004 - Chicago Bears, fourth round), Rod Babers (2003 - New York Giants, fourth round), and Quentin Jammer (San Diego Chargers).
5: Vince Young is the fifth Longhorn quarterback to be chosen by an NFL team with two coming in the last four years, with Chris Simms, now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter, being drafted by the Bucs in the third-round of the 2003 draft.
6: Sixth Longhorns were chosen in the 2006 draft, which is the most in one draft since 1997 when six were also selected.
7: Roy Williams was one of an NFL record seven receivers selected in the first-round of the 2004 NFL Draft.
7: Wide receiver Roy Williams was the seventh overall pick in the 2004 draft, marking the first time a UT wideout was taken in the first-round since Johnny "Lam" Jones in 1980.
8: With the selection of QB Vince Young by the Tennessee Titans with the third overall pick and S Michael Huff with the seventh overall pick, there have now been eight Longhorns selected in the top 10 in the Mack Brown era.
15: Fifteen of Mack Brown's former players have been selected in the first round in the past eight NFL Drafts (two from 1999-2006 and three in 1998).
15: Number of Longhorns that have been selected among the top five picks in the NFL Draft. UT's breakdown of its top five selections is as follows: No. 1 (three); No. 2 (two); No. 3 (three); No. 4 (three); No. 5 (four).
21: Mack Brown has had a player selected in each of the last 21 years.
23: Number of UT players that have been chosen among the first 10 picks.
26: Texas has had 26 players drafted in the last eight NFL Drafts.
38: Number of Longhorns that have been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft (tied for fifth-most among NCAA schools).
55: Number of Mack Brown's former Texas and North Carolina players that have been selected in the past 13 NFL drafts.
69: Texas has had a player selected in a National Football League-record 69 consecutive drafts.
76: In 21 years as a head coach, Mack Brown has had 76 players selected in the NFL Draft.
284: Dating back to its first selection -- Hugh Wolfe in 1938 (second round by the Pittsburgh Steelers) -- the Longhorns have had 284 players selected in the NFL Draft.
