NEWPORT, R.I. -- After participating in team trials from June 22 through July 1, University of Texas freshman catcher Preston Clark was named to the final 22-man roster of the 2006 USA Baseball National Team on Sunday, July 3.
While this summer will mark Clark's (Rockwall, Texas) first tour with the American squad, he also becomes the 11th Longhorns player to be a part of the national team. Additionally, with Clark's selection, Texas has now had at least one student-athlete on the USA roster in each of the last six seasons.
Texas' regular starting catcher in 2006, Clark batted .273 with 27 runs scored and 30 RBI in 61 games. Additionally, he hit .304 in conference play and amassed 17 multi-hit games overall to go along with five home runs, which was good for third on the squad.
The 2006 USA Baseball National Team, which will be managed by Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin, will look to defend its 2005 FISU World University Baseball Championship this August in Havana, Cuba. Team USA will also participate in the 35th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate Championship Series (July 25-29) as well as several Friendship Series at their home ballpark - the Durham Bulls Athletic Park - this summer.
