Soccer posts 3-0 exhibition victory over UTSA

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas women's soccer team received single first-half goals from seniors Amy Burlingham and Carrie Schmit, and added an "own goal" in the second half, en route to a 3-0 exhibition game win over UT-San Antonio Friday evening at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in front of a crowd of 752.
This was the Longhorns' lone exhibition game of the year, as head coach Chris Petrucelli's squad will open the 2006 regular season next Friday, Aug. 25 against Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. That match is set for a 7:00 p.m. (Central) start.
In the exhibition, the Longhorns out-shot the Roadrunners by a commanding 32-1 margin. UTSA was playing its inaugural intercollegiate match, as the Roadrunners are in their first season under Steve Ballard.
Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) put Texas on the board 20:51 into the contest. A shot by UT forward Ashley Foster was blocked by UTSA goalkeeper Rachel Francis, and the ball bounced loose in front of the goal where Burlingham rapped in a shot from eight yards out, unassisted.
With Texas up 1-0, Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) added to the score in the 40th minute following a Caitlin Kennedy corner kick. With the ball in play, Schmit got the pass from freshman Emily Anderson (Austin, Texas) and tallied UT's second goal. Anderson assisted on the play.
In the second half, Texas out-shot the Roadrunners 20-0. Texas added its final goal in the 82nd minute on an own goal (which deflected off a UTSA defender into the net).
Two Longhorns split time in goal, with sophomore Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) playing the entire first half. Pfenninger then started the second half before giving way to senior Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) who played the final 44 minutes in the nets. Pfenninger made UT's lone save on the night.
Francis played all 90 minutes in goal for the Roadrunners, recording nine saves.
"As the game went on, we got better and better and wore them down," noted Petrucelli. "We've been working on keeping possession of the ball, and we saw that during the game. Amy (Burlingham) played great. I thought she was our best player going forward. She was all over the field, scoring and creating a number of opportunities."
