No. 23 Soccer edges Cal State Fullerton, 3-2

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas soccer team won its sixth game in seven contests, defeating Cal State Fullerton, 3-2, on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Senior Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.), junior Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) and sophomore Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) scored one goal each in UT's third consecutive win.
"It's been a good week offensively," said eighth-year head coach Chris Petrucelli. "We have talent and scorers, and today they were dangerous. They can beat people on the dribble and showed they could strike balls pretty well. I'm sure we're a handful to defend."
"We felt like we could get another goal," Petrucelli continued. "Our constant offensive attack kept Fullerton on their heels and on their half of the field."
The Longhorns are now 6-2 and remain undefeated at home in 2006. The Titans were coming off a win against Texas A&M on Friday (Sept. 15) and move to 4-2-1 after today's loss.
Cal State Fullerton came out of the locker room aggressive, scoring a goal six minutes into the game. Sophomore Leslie Munoz found the back of the net on a pass from midfielder Nicole Scheid.
After the CSF goal, Texas stormed back, taking three shots over the next four minutes. Foster drove down the right side of the field, aiming at the Titan's goal eight minutes into the match but the ball soared over the top of the net.
On the ensuing drive, Carpenter dribbled down the far side, during the ninth minute of the match. As she got inside the box, Carpenter was tripped by the Titans' goalkeeper, which set up a free kick. Senior Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas) took the free kick and the ball careened off the far post.
After two close calls, Burlingham's goal tied the game at 1-1 in the eleventh minute. Sophomore defender Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) set up the score and was credited with her first assist of the year.
The scoring barrage continued as four minutes later, Carpenter drew Cal State Fullerton's goalkeeper Karen Bardsley away from the net and set up for the score. Her shot deflected off the Bardsley's hands to go into the net at the 15:12 mark.
Sophomore Stephanie Logterman scored the first goal of her career and final goal for the Longhorns, on a cornerkick in the 32nd minute of the match. The second-year defender kicked the ball from the corner which went through the keeper's hand and into the net.
"I actually didn't even know I scored the goal," Logterman recalls. "It's pretty cool, especially off a corner kick. Whatever I can do to help the team win-that's what I'm all about."
"I like the way Stephanie gets forward," said Petrucelli of Logterman, who returned from play with the U.S. Under-20 National Team two weeks ago. "A good portion of our attack goes through her right now. In the last week or so, we've been experimenting with her taking corners so it's good to see something come out of that."
Cal State Fullerton added one more goal in the first 45 minutes of play as senior Lauryn Welch chipped the ball over outstretched UT goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) and in between the posts at 33:05 on the clock. The goal brought CSF within one on the scoreboard, heading into halftime.
Neither team recorded a goal in the final 45 minutes of play, despite taking 16 shots (12 for Texas, four for Cal State Fullerton). The aggressive attack by the Longhorns led to five of seven corner kicks in the second half.
Pfenninger had two saves in 90 minutes in goal for her fifth win of the season.
Bardsley stayed in goal the entire match, recording six saves and allowing three goals. The Titans took six shots and one corner kick in the game.
Burlingham picked up her second goal and sixth point of the season. In her career, she has 11 goals and 38 points. She is one point shy of the tenth spot on UT's all-time point scorers.
Carpenter continues to move up the ranks on the UT all-time performers list. She recorded her seventh goal and 15th point of the season. She is tied for sixth place on Texas' all-time list with 21 career goals. She ranks eighth in career points with 53. Carpenter has 15 points through eight games in 2006. She is one point shy of her 2005 season total of 16 points in 17 matches.
The pair of wins against Nicholls State on Friday (Sept. 15) and against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday (Sept. 17) marks the second time this season UT has won consecutive games against opponents they faced for the first time in program history. Earlier this month, Texas defeated third-ranked Penn State and No. 13 Illinois on Friday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 3, respectively, in the first match-up between the programs in UT history.
The Longhorns open the Big 12 conference schedule with a 7 pm match on Friday, Sept. 22 against Texas Tech in Lubbock and on Sunday, Sept. 24 against Baylor at 7 pm in Waco, Texas.
"The conference will be more physical than any team we've faced so far," said Petrucelli. "We're in good shape heading into that portion of the schedule. Our first two opponents, Texas Tech and Baylor are good teams. Any game on the road in conference is tough. We are going to stay focused and play well. If we do, we'll have a good chance."
