Schmit nets first multi-goal game in Soccer win over Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas soccer team won its fourth consecutive match, beating Texas Tech, 2-0, in its Big 12 Conference season opener in Lubbock on Friday, Sept. 22.
Senior captain Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) scored twice in the win, with assists from senior Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and sophomore Jill Gilbeau (San Diego, Calif.), in front of a crowd of 1,231 at the R.P. Fuller Stadium.
UT moved to 7-2-0 and 1-0 in the Big 12 Conference while TTU dropped to 4-5 and 0-1 in the league.
"As a team, we played really well," said eighth-year head coach Chris Petrucelli. "(Lubbock) is a tough place to play. We were able to possess the ball and get a number of chances to score."
Both teams were shut out during the first 45 minutes of action.
At the 53:09 mark, Schmit scored the first goal of the match off a Burlingham cross in front of the net. Burlingham dribbled down the endline and served the ball to Schmit, who threw her body at the ball and forced a score.
In the second goal-scoring drive, Gilbeau served a long and high ball to Schmit, who charged down the field to the far post and headed the ball over the goalkeeper's head. The goal put the game away for the Longhorns in the 75th minute of the match (74:22).
"The thing with Carrie is that, every time we need a goal, she scores," said Petrucelli. "All of her goals have been very important."
The two-goal performance, the third and fourth scores of her career, is the first of Schmit's four year career. The four points (two per score) she put on the board is also a career-high in points per game for the senior. Schmit is now second on the squad this season in points with 10 behind team leader junior Kelsey Carpenter, who has 15.
Burlingham's assist on the first goal was her team-leading third of the season, moving her into a tie for sixth with Carol Finch (1995-97) on UT's all-time career assists list.
UT has won seven of its last eight matches and is riding a four-match, season-best win streak. The shutout is the third of the 2006 season for the Longhorns.
"Any road win in the conference is a good win and this is a good win for us," Petrucelli continued. "Every game we play in conference is going to be hard and we're excited to get this win."
Texas travels to Waco, Texas for another Big 12 match against Baylor on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006 at 7 pm (Central) at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
