No. 16/11 Soccer wins fifth consecutive match with 2-1 victory over Baylor

WACO, Texas -- Senior Amy Burlingham's first game-winning goal of the season put No. 16/11 Texas ahead 2-1 on the scoreboard as the Longhorns won their fifth consecutive match of the 2006 season over Baylor.
Taking their eighth match in nine games, the Longhorns moved to 8-2 and 2-0 in the Big 12 Conference action. Baylor dropped to 3-6-1 and lost its second league contest in 2006 on Sunday (Sept. 24) at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field in Waco, Texas in front 701 fans.
Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) scored 75 minutes, 45 seconds into the match off a strike from UT goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas). The second-year Longhorn saved a close ball on the Texas side of the field and booted it 75 yards to Burlingham, who dribbled through traffic to score her third goal of the season. The strike from Pfenninger counts as her second assist this year.
"That was a typical Big 12 game," said Petrucelli. "The games are always tight and physical. Both teams played hard. We were consistently getting behind them - hitting the posts and shooting over the nets. It was just a matter of time before we converted."
After giving Texas the lead in the match, Burlingham continued to attack, earning a free kick after a BU foul and on a separate drive towards the Bears' goal.
Junior forward Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) tied the match at 1-1 with a goal at 52:00. Carpenter stopped a goal kick by Baylor's Ashley Holder, headed it in front of her and blasted a shot into the right side of the net for her eighth score of the season.
Pfenninger and the Longhorns' defense recorded three saves in 90 minutes, allowing ony one ball into the net. It is the eighth time this season Pfenninger has allowed no more than one goal in a match.
Texas took 25 shots with 11 aimed between the posts. Carpenter took a team-leading eight and sophomore defender Kasey Moore recorded six attempts.
UT came out just as aggressive in the first half with sharp passes and a number of chances to score, taking four shots on goal out of nine overall attempts in the first 45 minutes of play. The Bears defense kept the Longhorns off the board in the first period of the game with the BU goalkeeper registering four saves.
At the 10:22 mark, UT had its first chance to score when Carpenter had a one-on-one with the BU goalkeeper Ashley Holder. Carpenter fired her first shot of the game but the Bears' starting goalkeeper made a diving save, deflecting the ball just enough to hit the cross bar.
The UT drive continued as Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) took a cornerkick that found Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) just outside the box. The Longhorns effort fell short of the goal, with Moore heading the ball just over the net.
Carpenter had another aggressive drive towards the end of the first half. She stopped the ball just short of the goal and blast a shot that outstretched Holder deflected off her hands to the right of the net.
Less than 30 seconds later, Moore took a header off a corner kick at the 40:34 mark, that again hit the post and bounced out of bounds.
Baylor scored first on a goal from senior Anna Schuch at the 19:35 mark. A long strike found Schuch on the Texas half of the field. Pfenninger came out of the box in a one-on-one and Schuch put it just passed her into the goal for the first score of the game.
UT has 12 second half goals this season against six in the opening 45 minutes. Impressively, the Texas defense has allowed just two goals during the second period in 10 contests.
Carpenter tied her season-high total of eight goals with her second half score tonight. She found the net eight times in 2004 and six times in 2005. She moves into a tie for fourth place on UT's all-time goals scored list with Kylee Wosnuk (2000-02) and Valerie Page (1995-98).
Carpenter has amassed 55 career points which puts her in seventh place on UT's all-time list with Alanna Makinano (1996-99) and Valerie Page (1995-98).
The Longhorns return home for their 2006 television debut with a home contest against Oklahoma on ESPNU on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 1 pm (Central). Prior to that contest, the Longhorns host Oklahoma State on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 pm (Central).
