COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- USA Swimming has announced its rosters for several international swimming events slated for 2007, and the events will have a decidedly burnt orange flavor in terms of swimmers and coaches.
Five current Longhorns -- headed by senior Garrett Weber-Gale's (Fox Point, Wis.) selection to the FINA World Championships Team USA roster as a 4x100-meter freestyle relay alternate -- will represent the United States in international meets next year. Sophomore Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.; 400 and 1500 free, 4x200-meter freestyle relay), juniors Matthew Lowe (Minot, N.D.; 100 breaststroke) and Matthew McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.; 4x100-meter freestyle relay) and senior Tyler O'Halloran (Boardman, Ohio; 4x200-meter freestyle relay) will compete in the World University Games scheduled for Aug. 8-18, 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Four former Longhorn All-Americans -- Ian Crocker (100 butterfly), Brendan Hansen (100, 200 breaststroke), Aaron Peirsol (100, 200 backstroke) and Neil Walker (100 freestyle, 4x100 freestyle) -- will join Weber-Gale on the Team USA roster for the FINA World Championships scheduled for March 25-April 1, 2007 in Melbourne, Australia. UT coach Eddie Reese will join Weber-Gale and the former Longhorns on the team as an assistant coach. An eight-time NCAA Coach of the Year, Reese is no stranger to coaching in the international swim scene, having served as the head men's coach for Team USA at the 1992 and 2004 Summer Olympiads in Barcelona, Spain and Athens,Greece, respectively.
In addition, Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas), who recently completed his collegiate eligibility at UT, will compete in the 100-meter breaststroke for Team USA at the 2007 Pan American Games scheduled for July 17-22 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Schurr, Weber-Gale, Klueh, Lowe, McGinnis and O'Halloran helped the Longhorns to a fourth-place finish last spring at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis. The Longhorns collected 31 All-America honors and seven honorable mention All-America selections.
