10.14.2007 | Soccer
WACO, Texas -- All-American junior defender Kasey Moore's first-half goal led No. 1 Texas to its sixth win in the last eight games, defeating Baylor, 1-0, at Betty Lou Mays Field in Waco, Texas on Sunday, Oct. 14.
The Longhorns soccer team moves to 10-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in Big 12 action. The Longhorns are unbeaten in seven of their last eight matches with the lone loss, a 2-0 decision at Texas A&M on Friday, Oct. 12. UT has now won 10 or more games in eight consecutive seasons dating back to the 2000 campaign. Baylor drops to 6-7-2, 0-5-1 and remains winless in Big 12 matches this year.
Moore's (Mission Viejo, Calif.) goal came in the 19th minute of the game. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American posted her sixth goal of the season, the most among UT defenders in 2007. Moore is tied for second on the team in goals with fellow NSCAA All-American senior forward Kelsey Carpenter. Junior midfielder Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas) was credited with the assist on Moore's goal, giving her the team lead with five on the season.
The scoring drive started with a shot by freshman forward Kirsten Birkhold (Scottsdale, Ariz.). BU sophomore goalkeeper Gianna Quintana deflected Birkhold's shot to the left side of the goal forcing a Texas corner kick. Gaines, who took the corner, placed the ball square in front of the nets as Moore headed the ball in from six yards out.
Junior Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) stood in goal for the Longhorns, saving one shot and recording her third shutout of the year. Pfenninger, Texas' career wins leader, now has 35 total wins since her first start on Sept. 25, 2005.
Quintana registered five saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of action.
The Longhorns return home to Mike A. Myers Stadium to face Missouri at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 19 and Kansas at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 21.
STATS (UT-BU): Corner kicks 8-0, shots 14-6, fouls 4-8
POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Chris Petrucelli
On the tightly-contested match against Baylor: We had a number of chances that we couldn't put away. We had the chance to get the second [goal] a couple of times; had we done that, it would have been a different game. When you get up 1-0 as the game wears on, you get concerned about protecting the lead more than getting the second goal. That's what happened late in the game.
On bouncing back from Friday's loss at A&M: It's always difficult to play after A&M because it's such an emotional high. I think we played very well considering how much energy we exerted on Friday, physically and emotionally.
JUNIOR DEFENDER Kasey Moore
On being able to help the team win: I'm glad I finally contributed offensively. I've been getting chances in front of the box off of corners but not really getting what I wanted to - a goal. We also got a win on the road in the Big 12 which is important and I'm glad I could help.
