LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Texas senior OT Tony Hills has been selected first-team All-America by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, it was announced at the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. on Thursday night.
"I'm really excited to be a member of the Walter Camp All-American team," Hills said. "I had a great time meeting all of the Walter Camp folks and hearing about the great tradition they have with Longhorn linemen. It's a great honor to be joining the long list of UT All-Americans and something I'll be proud of for the rest of my life."
Hills' selection gives Texas eight consecutive years with at least one player named to the team with a total of 15 players chosen in that time span. It is also the 11th season of the last 12 in which at least one Longhorn has been chosen.
"After going down with an injury late in the season, it's even more special to still be honored as an All-American," Hills said. "It kind of puts the icing on the cake of my college career. Now I'm going to keep coaching up the young guys, go to San Diego and try to win our fourth straight bowl game."
A member of the Outland Trophy watch list and a first-team All-Big 12 selection, Hills had started 24 straight games and played in 42 career games. He has been the key cog and veteran leader on a young offensive line that has paved the way for the Horns to average 462.0 yards of total offense (13th NCAA), 199.8 rushing yards (25th NCAA), 262.2 passing yards (36th NCAA) and 36.0 points per game (19th NCAA) this season. In his first season as a starter in 2006, UT averaged 391.5 yards of offense (22nd NCAA), 162.6 rushing yards (34th NCAA) and 35.9 points per game (6th NCAA).
With Hills leading the way and the UT line developing together, Texas rushed for 954 yards and 11 TDs on 152 carries (6.3 ypc) over his last three games. Longhorn running back Jamaal Charles has rushed for 644 yards and seven TDs on 72 carries (8.9 ypc) during that stretch and has 1,366 yards on the season (No. 5 on the UT all-time single-season list).
