Troy Dumais named James E. Sullivan Award finalist

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two-time Olympic diver and former Longhorns All-American Troy Dumais has been selected as one of 15 finalists for the 77th James E. Sullivan Award, presented annually to the nation's top amateur athlete.
The winner of the award, which is based on 2006 accomplishments, will be announced April 11.
Dumais (Austin, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics/U.S. Elite Diving) won five medals in 2006 international competition. The USA Diving Athlete of the Year, he won a pair of medals at the FINA World Cup, claiming a silver with Mitch Richeson in the men's 3-meter synchronized event and adding bronze on men's 3-meter to help the U.S. to its best World Cup finish since 1988.
Dumais won an individual bronze at the Speedo USA Diving Grand Prix as well. He and Richeson won a synchro silver at the USA Grand Prix and took bronze at the China Open.
On the national scene, Dumais won his 21st U.S. senior national title when he and Richeson won the 3-meter title at the Kaiser Permanente National Diving Championships.
The other 14 finalists are: Joey Cheek (speedskating), Sasha Cohen (figure skating), Chris Leak (football), Jessica Long (paralympian swimmer), Joakim Noah (basketball), Apolo Ohno (speedskating), Candace Parker (women's basketball), Michael Phelps (swimming), Brady Quinn (football), Angela Ruggerio (ice hockey), Troy Smith (football), Hannah Teter (snowboarding), Joe Warren (wrestling) and Bill Zadick (wresting).
Men's basketball player J.J. Redick won the award last year, when former University of Texas diver Laura Wilkinson was among the finalists.
Fans are invited to join in the voting for the Sullivan Award. The total fan votes will count one-third toward the final tally. Ballots also are being set to AAU officials, U.S. Olympic Committee Members, college sports information directors and others.
