COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Junior hurler Meagan Denny allowed just one run, but the No. 9 Texas Softball team stranded 11 runners and failed to plate a run, as it fell to Missouri, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at University Field. The loss dropped the Longhorns to 26-9 on the season and 2-3 in Big 12 Conference play, while the Tigers improved to 27-17 overall and 3-0 in league play.
Denny (17-8) suffered the loss after tossing a complete game, scattering four hits, allowing one run and striking out two Missouri batters.
Missouri scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, using a leadoff single to centerfield by Kathy Masterson to start the rally. Senior third baseman A.J. White then advanced Masterson to second when she reached on a failed fielder's choice attempt. Denny retired the next two batters in order, before surrendering a two-out RBI single to Julie Silver that scored Masterson, giving Mizzou a 1-0 lead that stood for the duration of the game.
After three innings of scoreless play the Longhorns threatened in the fourth inning, using a pair of hits and a Mizzou error to load the bases, but UT came away empty-handed, stranding three baserunners as the score remained 0-0.
Texas loaded the bases again in the top of the seventh inning, behind a leadoff single by Shannon Thomas and a walk by Loryn Johnson. Missouri intentionally walked senior catcher Megan Willis to load the bases, but the Tigers escaped the threat, closing out the game with a 1-0 lead.
