AUSTIN, Texas -- Baylor senior hurler Lisa Ferguson tossed a complete game shutout, scattering four hits over seven innings to down No. 11 Texas, 6-0, Wednesday night at McCombs Field. The victory moved the ninth-ranked Bears to 37-9 on the season and 7-0 in Big 12 Conference play, while the Longhorns fell to 28-11 and 3-5 in league play.
Texas' starter Meagan Denny (18-10) held Baylor scoreless over the first four frames, scattering two hits and striking out five Bears during that stretch. Ferguson (17-4) earned the victory for Baylor, moving to 5-0 in Big 12 play after allowing just four baserunners and striking out three.
Baylor's bats caught fire in the fifth, using a leadoff single by Kelsey Sage to start the frame. Tiffany Wesley advanced Sage to second when she reached on a fielder's choice, and a pinch-hit single by Jordan Daniels loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Denny then issued a bases-loaded walk to Brette Reagan, allowing the Bears to plate their first run of the contest.
First baseman Ashley Monceaux followed with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield that scored Wesley, pushing the Baylor lead to 2-0. The Bears tacked on two more runs when senior catcher Chelsi Lake hammered a two-out, two-run single down the rightfield line, scoring pinchrunner Nicole Wesley and Reagan to give Baylor a 4-0 edge.
"Tonight we played a quality team that is very well-balanced," said head coach Connie Clark. "We can't hang our heads after this game because it's a long season and we have a very tough conference schedule."
The Bears added another run in the sixth on a line drive home run by Sage and posted their sixth run of the game in the final frame, coming home on a throw to second by Megan Willis.
Willis, sophomore rightfielder Kacie Gaskin, senior first baseman Jacqueline Williams and freshman Kori Cook each recorded a hit on the night, while Lake and Sage anchored the Baylor offense with two hits each.
Texas returns to action Saturday, April 14 when it travels to Lincoln, Neb. for a two-game Big 12 Conference series with Nebraska. Live stats of both games will be available on TexasSports.com.
