Chalk's home run lifts Softball past Stetson, 2-0

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Texas' freshman leftfielder Brittany Chalk hammered a two-run home run in top of the sixth inning to lift the 18th-ranked Texas Softball team to a 2-0 victory over Stetson on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Gainesville Regional. The Longhorns return to action at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, May 19, taking on Georgia Tech (54-15, 1-1 NCAA) for a chance to move into Sunday's championship game against Florida.
Texas' victory moved the Longhorns to 34-19 on the year, while Stetson fell to 44-22. Longhorns' junior starter Meagan Denny (21-15) earned the victory for UT, tossing six innings, allowing just two hits and fanning 11 Hatters. The junior hurler struck out seven of the first nine batters of the game.
Freshman righthander Erin Tresselt came on in relief in the seventh, after Denny allowed a leadoff single. Tresselt escaped the jam, preserving the UT victory en route to recording her fourth save of the season. Hatters' starter Amanda Lindsey (9-5) suffered the loss for Stetson, going a full seven innings, allowing nine hits and striking out eight.
Freshman designated player Tallie Thrasher led off the sixth with her second double of the game, before giving way to pinch runner Torrey Schroeder. Chalk followed with a two-run blast to leftfield, breaking a scoreless tie and giving the Horns a 2-0 advantage. Chalk's homer was the first of her career and marked her fifth hit in six NCAA Regional plate appearances.
Denny carried a perfect game through the first four innings, before surrendering a leadoff single to Lindsay Wightman n the top of the fifth inning. Blythe Golden advanced Wightman to second with a sacrifice bunt and Amanda Lindsey reached on a walk, but Denny escaped the inning, recording a pair of strikeouts.
Chalk headlined the Texas offense with three hits, while Thrasher and Williams registered two hits apiece.
