Women's Track and Field earns 13 bids to NCAA Midwest Region Championships

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas has two event leaders among 13 NCAA qualifiers in the field for the 2007 NCAA Midwest Region Track and Field Championship that takes place from Friday to Saturday, May 25-26 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Texas, the defending NCAA Midwest Region Champions, are led by sophomore All-American and defending NCAA national champion high jumper Destinee Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) and senior All-American and NCAA national champion shot putter Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) are the regional favorites in the high jump and shot put, respectively.
The sprints add points for the UT group as sophomore All-American and NCAA relay champion Alexandria Anderson (Chicago, Ill.) has the second fastest times in the Midwest in the 100 and the 200. Senior All-American sprinter Chauntae Bayne (Fort Worth, Texas) is the fifth fastest 100-meter runner in and has the sixth best time in the 200.
The Longhorns have three regional qualifiers in the 800. Junior Temeka Kincy (Indianapolis, Ind.), sophomore Katara Rosby (Baton Rouge, La.) and freshman Devon Williams (Parksville, Md.) will represent UT in the middle distance event.
The hurdles are anchored by All-Big 12 sophomore honorees -- Kira Robinson (Denver, Colo.) and Angel Williams (Clarendon, Texas). Robinson is UT's top short hurdler and Williams is the Longhorns' main threat in the 400-meter hurdles.
Both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays enter the meet with the second fastest time in the region. Junior and NCAA relay national champion Jasmine Lee (Norwalk, Calif.) led off both relays while senior and NCAA relay national champion Jerrika Chapple (Lancaster, Texas) ran a segment of the 4x100. Hurdler Williams was the third leg of the 4x400.
The region roster for field events includes junior pole vaulter Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas), who is 11th in the region, and freshman shot putter Jordyn Brown (Mesquite, Texas), who stands at No. 19 in the Midwest.
