BANGKOK -- University of Texas junior Michael Klueh and senior Matt McGinnis accounted for one-half of Team USA's meet record-setting 800-meter freestyle relay Sunday at the 2007 World University Games.
The American quartet of McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.), Adam Ritter, Doug Van Wie and Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) won gold in a new meet-record time of 7:13.72. McGinnis led off the gold medal-winning relay in 1:49.14 before giving way to Ritter and Van Wie. Klueh closed out the relay in 1:48.68 to secure the record for the Americans.
The mark broke the meet record of 7:16.35 set earlier in the day by Team USA; McGinnis swam in the morning relay, though Klueh did not. The morning relay quartet broke the previous meet record of 7:17.83 set by Team USA at the 1995 World University Games in Fukuoka, Japan.
Klueh added a silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle by taking second in 3:49.10. Romania's Dragos Coman took the gold in 3:48.29, and Russia's Yury Prilukov won the bronze in 3:49.19.
McGinnis' gold was his second such medal of the meet after helping Team USA to top honors in the 400-meter freestyle relay on Friday, Aug. 10.
