HANAHAN, S.C. -- Texas senior Ashley Rollins shot a two-under 70 to lead the Longhorns in round two at the 2007 Cougar Classic at the par 72, 6,159-yard Yeaman's Hall Golf Club.
Texas finished round two with a five-over 293, which lifted the Longhorns from a tie for fourth place into sole possession of third place after 36 holes. At five-over for the tournament, the Longhorns sit five strokes behind first-place Tennessee. Notre Dame holds the second slot at three-over par.
With a 288 in round one coupled with the 293 in round two, Texas recorded two sub-300 rounds in the same tournament for the first time since 2005, when UT completed the feat at the Big 12 Championship
Playing in her first tournament as a Longhorn after playing two-and-one-half seasons at the University of New Mexico, Rollins (Austin, Texas/Westwood HS) lowered her first-round score by four strokes in the second round.
The 2007 U.S. Women's Open qualifier headed into the turn with a 36 behind two birdies before stroking a 34 behind five birdies on the back nine. Rollins vaulted from a tie for 35th place into a tie for 12th place at even par and stands five strokes behind tournament leader So-Hyun Park of Notre Dame.
Despite shooting a two-over 74 in round two, senior Kelley Louth remains in contention for medalist honors after finishing the day alongside Rollins in a tie for 12th place at even par. With three birdies on the day, Louth (Victoria, Texas) followed a 37 on the front nine with a 37 on the back nine.
Junior Caney Hines opened with a 39 on the front nine but limited her mistakes to stroke a 36 on the back nine. Hines (San Antonio, Texas) birdied the second hole before adding birdies at the 12th and 18th holes. At three-over for the tournament, Hines is tied for 26th place with 18 holes remaining.
Senior Julia Best equaled her first-round score of 74 with an identical showing in round two. Best (Bulverde, Texas) opened with a 39 on the front nine before rebounding with a 35 on the back nine behind three birdies. At four-over for the tournament, Best is tied for 32nd place with one round remaining.
Sophomore Shannon Fish (Spring, Texas) followed a 38 on the front nine with a 38 on the back nine to finish the round at four-over par. Fish is tied for 32nd place at four-over for the tournament.
