No. 7 Men's Tennis opens ASU Invitational with nine victories

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Seventh-ranked Texas registered nine singles and doubles victories on the opening day of the ASU Invitational Friday at Arizona State's Whiteman Tennis Center.
Freshman Kellen Damico, who begins the new year ranked 24th in the ITA preseason singles rankings, defeated Arizona State's Matt Brooklyn, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, and 53rd-ranked sophomore Dimitar Kutrovsky knocked off the Sun Devils' Juan Carlos Rebaza, 6-2, 6-4.
UT sophomore Josh Zavala outlasted ASU's John Nanosky in three sets, and senior Luis Diaz Barriga dealt Arizona State's Wes Miller a 6-3, 6-4 defeat.
Sophomore Jon Wiegand, ranked No. 100 in the ITA singles rankings, posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rice's Hoony Shin, and sophomore Rook Schellenberg defeated Rice's Dennis Polvakov, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Texas added three doubles victories to close out the opening day. The Longhorns begin the second day of the ASU Invitational on Saturday at 9 a.m. Mountain time.
