Four from Women's Track and Field finish in top 10 at Hilton Memorial

HOUSTON -- Four Longhorns finished in the top 10 as No. 11 Texas completed competition at the Leonard Hilton Memorial meet at Yeoman Field House on Friday, Jan. 18.
Freshman and Houston native Jessica Heath had the highest finish of the day, crossing the finish line third in 17:57.89 in the 5,000-meter run. Fellow newcomer Allison Mendez (Rockwall, Texas) came in spot behind her, placing fourth in 18:17.07.
Three middle distance runners placed in the top 16 in their respective events. Senior Mariya Townswick (Briarcliff, Texas) completed the mile race in 5:13.84 for seventh place. Freshman Jena Cuellar (Progreso Lakes, Texas) finished the 800 in 2:23.52 for sixth place ahead of sophomore Lauren Kern (Phoenix, Ariz.), who placed 16th in 2:30.61.
Junior Candace Vielma (Austin, Texas) led all Horns' vaulters, clearing 10-11.75 (3.35m) to tie for 12th place.
In the sprints, newcomer Jennifer Reha (Carrollton, Texas) clocked 1:00.31 in taking 12th in the 400. Teammate Jerramesha Reed (Dallas, Texas) finished two spots behind Reha, running 1:01.36 for 14th. Reed also finished 14th in the 200 (26.86). Fellow rookie Christina Jackson (Corinth, Texas) ran 7.90 in the 60 for 16th place and 26.60 for 12th in the 200.
Other finishes: Junior Kelly Heinbaugh placed 29th in the 400 in 1:04.21 and 26th in the 800 in 2:35.34. Freshman Ashlei King ran 10.11 in the 60-meter hurdles and 8.39 in the 60-meter dash. Teammate Sheniqua Drakeford completed two laps in the 400 in 1:08.04.Freshman Megan Vasquez ran 5:43.60 in the mile to finish 31st.
The bulk of the women's team returns to action tomorrow at the Illinois Women's Quadrangular meet at the Armory in Champaign, Ill.
