Keith nets gamewinner in No. 7 Soccer's 2-1 win over Iowa State

AUSTIN, Texas -- Freshman Lucy Keith scored the gamewinner in the 63rd minute to give the Longhorns their first Big 12 win of the season. No. 7 Texas (8-1-2, 1-1-1 Big 12) defeated Iowa State (4-7-1, 0-3-1 Big 12) 2-1 at Mike A. Myers Stadium Sunday afternoon and extended its home unbeaten streak to 23 matches with the win.
Keith, starting in her first game as a Longhorn, connected on a deflected shot for her first goal of the season. Sophomore Alisha Ortiz struck the ball right at ISU keeper Ann Gleason who was only able to deflect the ball after diving for the save. The ball bounced right to Keith who was able to tap it in for the gamewinner.
Iowa State managed to score on its first shot of the game after 15 minutes of straight Longhorn possessions. Freshman Leslie Hill played the ball to junior Amanda Nimtz at the top of the box. Nimtz dribbled to the six-yard area and sent the ball to the left corner for the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
Texas responded just six minutes later off a corner kick from Stephanie Logterman. The senior sent the cross to the center of the box where Keith was able to get her head on it. The freshman played the ball to junior Emily Anderson who netted the equalizer. The goal was the first of the season for the defender out of Austin.
The Longhorns fired a season-high 24 shots while only allowing five from Iowa State. Texas also had a season-high 11 corner kicks just in the first half while not giving up one corner opportunity to the Cyclones.
Texas takes Big 12 play on the road next week traveling to Colorado on Friday, Oct. 10, for a 5 p.m. Central match. The Longhorns face Texas Tech in Lubbock on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. Central.

On scoring the game winner: It feels great. I happened to be at the right spot at the right time and it just feels awesome to contribute.
On playing the full game for the first time: At first, I was a little nervous, but the team is just great. They quickly calmed me down and helped me feel comfortable out there.
On the team's overall performance today: I think we came out motivated, kept our composure, and played well overall.

On how this game was different than the Nebraska game: I think we really picked up our level of play today. After Nebraska we were disappointed with our results, disappointed with our play, and we knew that when we came out here today something had to change or we weren't going to win.
On the goal scored against them: It's a little disappointing because we only gave up a few shots and one of them ended up being a goal. But we are taking more chances up top and putting more players and pressure there so, it does make us more susceptible to counter-attacks.
On the impact of today's game on their Big 12 Conference play overall: We had played well against A&M, but we didn't get the win we wanted. We were obviously disappointed with the game against Nebraska, and so we just really decided that we have to step up our game from here on out. I think today was a really good start to that new mentality.
On Amanda Nimitz: She is dynamic and excellent with the ball. I think she played well and I think she will continue to give players a lot of trouble throughout conference play.
HEAD COACH Chris Petrucelli
On overall play today: I think we played much better today than we did on Friday. We were more dangerous offensively than we have been in a long time, and I think we made some great steps forward today.
On the ISU's early lead: I felt like we came out with real control of the game and then gave up a goal out of nowhere. It completely changed everything. Our game went from having the potential to be a big scorer for us, and next thing you know, we are down by one and we are fighting to get back.
On the team's offensive pressure: We talked a lot about trying to get our midfield in the box and trying to get more service going forward to make us more dangerous up top. The second goal was a direct result of those changes happening, and it is always really great to see the changes you hope for in the game actually happen.
On Lucy Keith's performance: I have gto ive Lucy credit and not just because of the goal. It was the first game she has played the full ninety minutes. She did so because we needed her out there, and honestly, I thought she did a really good job.
