CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- The No. 25 Texas Softball team used a grand slam by sophomore designated player Tallie Thrasher and a 14-strikeout effort by senior hurler Meagan Denny to down, No. 18 UNLV 4-1, Friday afternoon at the Palm Springs Classic.
Denny (5-0) tossed a complete game, four-hitter for the Horns, allowing one run and fanning 14 batters. Rebels' starter Stephanie Bregante (5-3) threw a complete game for UNLV (10-3-1), surrendering four runs on five hits, while striking out five and allowing three walks.
Texas (5-2-1) rallied in the third, taking advantage of a leadoff walk by junior first baseman Desiree Williams and a double by junior catcher Kacie Gaskin to start the Horns' threat. Freshman rightfielder Amy Hooks earned a walk to load the bases and set the stage for Thrasher, who ripped a grand slam over the right centerfield wall to put UT ahead, 4-1.
The Rebels got on the board early, using three hits in the first inning to plate a run and claim a 1-0 edge. Centerfielder Brittany Bolinger started the frame with an infield single and advanced to third on a single to leftfield by Jaci Hull. Bolinger came around to score on Laura Briones' RBI single, giving UNLV an early lead.
Texas returns to action at 8 p.m. Central on Friday, Feb. 22 when it takes on Fresno State at the Palm Springs Classic.
