HOUSTON -- The No. 12 Texas Women's Track and Field team posted five NCAA Midwest Region qualifying marks on the final day of competition at the 2008 Victor Lopez Bayou Classic.
All-Americans Alexandria Anderson, Temeka Kincy and Katara Rosby, and All-Big 12 performers Jordyn Brown and Chantel Malone secured tickets to the 2008 NCAA Midwest Region Championship from May 30-31 in Lincoln, Neb. Sophomore Betzy Jimenez (Hereford, Texas) brought the total to six as she met the NCAA standard on Friday (March 28) night at the Rice Track Stadium with a time of four minutes, 42.97 seconds in the 1,500-meter run.
Middle distance runners, Kincy (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Rosby (Baton Rouge, La.), finished one-two in the 800-meter run. Kincy, a senior and three-time All-American, won the 800 in 2:07.08 seconds while Rosby, in her third-year at Texas and fresh off an indoor All-American honor as a leg of the 1,600-meter relay, finished second in 2:08.71.
Anderson (Chicago, Ill.), a 12-time All-American, clocked 53.79 in the 400-meter dash to finish third in her first race of the 2008 outdoor season.
Brown (Mesquite, Texas), in her second year on the Forty Acres, improved her region-qualifying and personal-best distance from the Texas Invitational by nearly five feet, tossing 54 feet, 3.25 inches (16.54m) for the win. She opened the season last week with her career-best mark of 49-1.75 (14.98m) in Austin.
Malone (Tortola, British Virgin Islands) captured the event championship in the triple jump, landing in the pit in 40-10.25 (12.45m). The first-time NCAA regional qualifier just missed her personal best mark of 41-0.5 (12.51m) set at the 2007 Atlanta (Ga.) Dekalb Prep Classic.
Texas added an event championship in the 100-meter hurdles as senior Alandra Sherman, competing in her hometown for the final time in her collegiate career, won in 14.02 seconds.
Senior Chauntae Bayne (Saginaw, Texas) opened her senior season with an 11.76-second performance in the 100-meter dash. She finished second overall in the race, and missed the NCAA regional qualifying standard of 11.75 by just one-hundredth of a second.
Redshirt sophomore Britney Orville (Houston, Texas) returned to the 400-meter hurdles for the first time since shattering her femur during the 2007 outdoor season. Orville finished second in 1:03.19.
Texas will compete at home, hosting the 81st Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium. The largest home meet of the season for UT runs from Wednesday-Saturday, April 2-5.
