KINGSVILLE, Texas -- University of Texas senior Ashley Laughlin broke her own school record in the pole vault with a winning leap of 13 feet, 4.25 inches, qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in the process, and the Longhorns had six other first-place finishes at the one-day Javelina Invitational track and field event, held at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
Leading the other first-place Texas performers was sophomore Jordyn Brown who picked up firsts in both the s shot put and discus events. Brown (Mesquite, Texas/Mesquite HS) had a winning toss of 52 feet, 8.75 inches (16.07 meters), her second-best shot put effort of the outdoor campaign. It also was a NCAA regional qualifying throw, her third qualifier of the outdoor season. Brown also won the discus event with a 152 feet, 11 inches (46.62 m) effort, her second-best performance of the season in that event as well.
Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas/Marble Falls HS) broke her former outdoor pole vault school mark of 13 feet, 1.5 inches which she set at the 2007 Big 12 Championships last May. Laughlin's leap of 13 feet, 4.25 inches (4.07m) easily surpassed her former best leap of this outdoor season -- 3.95m -- which she had at the Texas Invitational on March 22.
Laughlin's school-record jump also set a Javelina Stadium record as well, as it was the only stadium mark set Saturday at the meet which featured men's and women's competitors. The former stadium mark was 13 feet, 2 inches by Abilene Christian pole vaulter Val Gorter in 2004.
The other UT first-place finishes were turned in by sophomore Britney Orville (Houston, Texas/Westbury HS), winning the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:03.71; freshman Chantel Malone (Tortola, British Virgin Islands/Elmore Stoutt HS), who won at 400 meters (55.63); freshman Kristin Schultz (The Woodlands, TX /The Woodlands HS) in the high jump with her season-best 5 feet, 6 inches (1.65m); and senior Alandra Sherman (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) who won the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 14.69 seconds.
Texas will compete at its home track for the final time this year next Saturday, April 19, when UT hosts the Texas Twilight meet at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. The meet is a men's and women's competition with the field events beginning at 2 p.m. and the running events scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. Central.
