BOULDER, Colo. -- On the third and final day of the 2008 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships Sunday, the Texas women's track squad's efforts were highlighted by second-place finishes by junior Alex Anderson in the 100 meter dash and by senior Temeka Kincy in the 800 meter run. The meet took place at the University of Colorado's Potts Stadium.
The Longhorns picked up 51 points in Sunday's final day of competition to finish with 59 points at the three-day meet, tying for seventh. The A&M women won their second consecutive Big 12 outdoor title, scoring 157 points. Nebraska was second (105 points), followed by Texas Tech (101.5), Kansas (76.5), Oklahoma (75) and UT and Baylor which tied for seventh.
Host Colorado won the Big 12 men's competition, earning the league crown for the first time.
The 100 meter dash featured two of the top sprinters in the nation in All-American Anderson (Chicago, Ill.) and Texas A&M All-America senior Simone Facey, the defending Big 12 100 meter champion. Anderson raced to her second-best time ever in the 100 meters in a time of 11.11, which was an NCAA Regional-qualifying mark and just one one-hundredth of a second off her prior best of 11.10. Her second-place finish gave UT eight points. Facey won the title, crossing in 10.95 to become the first female to finish under 11 seconds all year. Facey, Anderson and the next five finishers all broke the Potts Stadium record of 11.44, set in 1986.
In the 800 meter finals, Kincy (Indianapolis, Ind.) picked up her sixth Big 12 second-place finish in her career, racing to a time of 2:05.75 as she was just edged out for the title by Baylor's Lauren Hagans who crossed the line in 2:05.32 -- just 0.43 seconds ahead of Kincy. Kincy's time was her fastest of the spring and an NCAA Regional qualifying mark as well. Both Kincy and Hagans broke the Potts Stadium record of 2:06.79 which had stood since 1991.
In the 200, Anderson was fifth in an NCAA Regional-qualifying time of 22.75, her fastest time of the spring. Texas A&M sophomore Porscha Lucas ran a world best 22.29 in the event, beating last year's champion and teammate Facey. Both women surpassed the former Big 12 Outdoor Championships record (22.49) set by Facey last year.
Texas received more points (nine points total) in the 1,500 meter run as sophomore Betzy Jimenez (Hereford, Texas) placed third and senior Mariya Townswick (Briarcliff, Texas) was sixth. Jimenez's time of 4:31.20 was an NCAA regional qualifier. She finished six seconds off the pace of All-American Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech (4:25.00) who won the event for the second consecutive year. Townswick turned in a 4:43.45 for her sixth-place finish.
In the 4x400 relay, Baylor won the title (3:32.28) followed by Texas A&M (3:33.53) and Texas in third. The Longhorns quartet turned in an NCAA qualifying time of 3:35.94. Freshman Chantel Malone ran the leadoff leg followed by Anderson, junior Katara Rosby and Kincy as anchor.
The Longhorns' 4x100 meter relay squad was fourth in the finals as junior Kira Robinson, Anderson, senior Chauntae Bayne and anchor Malone were clocked in 44.59, qualifying for the NCAA regionals with that finish. The event was won by Texas A&M in 42.88 seconds which broke the meet record held by Texas (43.36) since 1999.
Other Texas point scorers on Sunday afternoon included sophomore Jordyn Brown who was fifth in the discus and Bayne, fifth in the 400 meter run. Brown (Mesquite, Texas), second on Saturday in the shot put, tossed the discus 165 feet, 8 inches (50.50 meters), her best throw of the spring and an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Brown also competed in the Big 12's hammer throw event on Friday, placing 10th.
Bayne (Saginaw, Texas) qualified for the NCAA regionals in the 400 with her time of 53.24 seconds -- her fastest time of the spring and the best 400 time by any Longhorns this outdoor season. Crowned the 400 champion was Texas A&M's Jessica Beard (51.09).
Competing in her first Big 12 outdoor meet, freshman and 16-year-old Malone also placed seventh in the triple jump, earning the Longhorns two points. Malone had an NCAA qualifying mark for the third time this spring as she jumped 42 feet, 1.5 inches (12.84 meters). The winner of the triple jump was Aggie junior Yasmine Regis (45-05.25, 13.85 meters).
UT's final point scorer on the day was junior Britney Orville (Houston, Texas) who was eighth in the 400 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 1:03.23.
Other Texas competitors Sunday included sophomore Lauren Salisbury and freshman Jessica Heath in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and sophomore Asia Myrland in the 5000 and 10,000 meter races. Salisbury (Pflugerville, Texas) finished 10th in the steeplechase (11:35.14) while Heath (Houston, Texas) was 13th in 11:54.63. Myrland (Verona, Wisc.) was 10th in the 10,000 meter race (37:40.79), running the event for the first time outdoors. She was 18th in the 5,000 meter run (18:38.85).
