BEIJING -- Texas-Ex Ian Crocker missed the medal podium by a mere one one-hundredth of a second, as he placed fourth in the 100-meter butterfly Saturday morning at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Crocker opened the initial 50 meters in 23.70, where he held second, before closing in 27.43 to finish in 51.13. Australia's Andrew Lauterstein edged Crocker in 51.12. Michael Phelps rallied from seventh after 50 meters to out-touch Serbia's Milorad Cavic by one one-hundredth of a second to win his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Games in 50.58. Notably, Crocker retains his world-record mark of 50.40 set at the 2005 FINA World Championships in Montreal, Quebec.
On Friday, Crocker swam the butterfly leg for Team USA in the preliminary round of the 4x100m medley relay. As a result, Crocker will collect any medal earned by Team USA in the finals, whether or not he swims in the finals. Phelps likely will swim the butterfly leg in Sunday's finals.
