LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Sophomore Niki Arlitt scored from 25 yards out in the 107th minute to lift eighth-ranked Texas to a 1-0 victory over No. 25 Louisville at Cardinal Park, Sunday afternoon. The win was the Horns' first double-overtime victory since Sept. 3, 2006.
Louisville gave the Horns a couple of scares early in the match when it had two shots on goal rebound off UT keeper Dianna Pfenninger and leave an open net. UT's backline was able to recover though, deflecting both shots out of play. UL held the offensive advantage during the first half firing five shots on goal while UT had none.
The second half played to a more offensive tune with both teams having multiple chances to score. Louisville's Giselle Mangal had the best opportunity halfway through the second half when she dribbled past UT defender Erica Campanelli and had a one-on-one with Pfenninger. The senior keeper came out to challenge and took the ball from Mangal mid-dribble.
Texas' defense held strong throughout the second half, with Pfenninger recording eight saves, to send the game to extra minutes. Neither team budged during the first overtime period with UT only allowing one shot on goal.
In the second overtime period, UT had a few chances to score on free kicks but finally netted the game winner when Niki Arlitt connected on a ball from 25 yards out and sent it into the top right corner of the goal past UL keeper Chloe Kiefer. The goal was Arlitt's first of the season and was her first game-winner since Nov. 11, 2007.
