COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- No. 7 Texas won eight of the 15 events in the Texas A&M vs. UT Dual Meet at the Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium on Saturday, but fell to the sixth-ranked Aggies, 81-77. The meet, which was the first dual meet between the two schools since 1997, was scored in a 5-3-2-1 format, with no more than two athletes from one school earning points in each event.
"Our upperclassmen that have had the opportunity to compete indoors before stepped up and did a good job competing today," said head coach Bubba Thornton. "The newcomers still have some work to do, but it looks like we're going to have a strong group. When you look at the overall team performance, with eight wins to seven wins, it shows us who is on the right path and who we need to work with to get them ready for the conference meet."
The Horns posted five NCAA provisional marks behind a 1-2-3 finish in the 800 meters from seniors Jacob Hernandez, Tevan Everett and Mike Carmody. Hernandez paced the 800 field with a 1:48.72 followed by Everett at 1:49.54 and Carmody at 1:49.89.
Senior Raymond Harris matched his indoor career best with a provisional 2.18m (7-1.75) to win the high jump, while sophomore Devon Bond finished second with a clearance of 2.00m (6-6.75).
The 1,600-meter relay of juniors Tevas and Tevan Everett, Hernandez and sophomore Danzell Fortson was the other provisional qualifier, winning the event in 3:10.38.
The Horns won three other events on the track and two in the field. Senior Jake Morse led a 1-2 finish in the mile with a 4:08.83, followed by sophomore Logan Gonzalez (4:10.29). Senior Elliot O'Hare took the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.01, while the distance medley relay of senior Kyle Miller, sophomore Andre Thomas, Carmody and Morse won with a 9:56.37.
In addition to Harris' win in the high jump, reigning outdoor national champion Maston Wallace won the pole vault with a clearance of 5.08m (16-8), while junior Brandon Drenon took the shot put with a mark of 16.77m (55-0.25).
The Horns will return to College Station next weekend to compete in the Big 12 vs. SEC meet. Texas, Texas A&M and Missouri will represent the Big 12, while Florida, LSU and Mississippi will compete for the SEC.
