Soccer falls to Texas A&M, 4-0, in State Farm Lone Star Showdown

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The University of Texas Soccer team (8-8-3, 4-3-3) dropped a 4-0 decision to Texas A&M (12-5-2, 6-2-2) Friday night at Aggie Soccer Complex in front of 4,385 fans. UT finished the regular season sixth in the Big 12 and will face third-seeded Colorado in the 2009 Big 12 Championship at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4.
With tonight's loss, Texas A&M earned one point in the annual State Farm Lone Star Showdown and pulls even in this year's standings at 1.0-1.0. This marks the sixth year of the Showdown, the all-sports athletic competition between Texas and Texas A&M. In order to win the Showdown, a school must acquire 10.0 points during the year.
Texas A&M posted its first goal in the 33rd minute. Whitney Hooper took the ball down the right line and took a shot on goal that was deflected by the Texas backline. Kim Castleberry was there to collect the rebound and fired it into the back left corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
A&M struck again just two minutes into the start of the second half. Bri Young drove the ball up the center of the field and fired a shot from 30 yards out that went sailing into the top right corner of the net.
Young assisted A&M's next goal when she sent a low ball across the front of the net that slipped through the UT backline. Nora Skelton received the pass right in front of the net and sent it past a diving Alexa Gaul to the lower right corner for the 3-0 lead.
With eight minutes remaining, Texas got called for a foul in the box setting up a penalty kick for the Aggies. Rachel Shipley's free opportunity was successful, giving A&M the final score of 4-0.
Sophomore Courtney Goodson led the Horns with three shots while Gaul was forced to make five saves.
Texas starts its postseason run at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4 when it faces third-seeded Colorado in San Antonio at the 2008 Big 12 Soccer Championship.

On the overall match: We were on our heels most of the match and A&M played quite well and we're going to have to rebound and get ready to play next week.
On facing Colorado in the Big 12 Championship: When we play Colorado, you know it will be a soccer game. They're a team that plays well and you know it's not going to be an overly physical game. So I think that will be something that we can look forward to.
