Men's Swimming and Diving assumes commanding lead against Indiana

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas claimed 13 of 17 events to assume a commanding lead in the opening session of its dual meet against Indiana Friday at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Longhorns hold a 170-140 lead over the Hoosiers with only platform diving to be scored on Saturday. Platform diving gets underway Saturday at 11 a.m. Central.
UT opened with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, where senior Hill Taylor, junior Scott Spann and seniors Ricky Berens and Ben Van Roekel finished in 1 minute, 29.97 seconds. Taylor led off in 23.05 before Spann split 25.54 on the breaststroke. Berens picked up the butterfly in 21.37, and Van Roekel anchored in 20.01.
Sophomore Jackson Wilcox, a two-time All-American last season, took the 1,650 freestyle in 15:42.44. Junior Jim Robertson took third in 16:01.98. Freshman Cole Cragin clocked a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 48.88 to win the 100 backstroke, and senior Hill Taylor took second in 49.63.
Sophomore Eric Friedland led a one-two-three-four Texas finish in the 100 breaststroke, as he claimed the event in 56.19. Spann took second in 56.54, and senior Andrew Wang took third in 58.06. Freshman Dax Hill placed fourth in 58.62. Junior Jonathan Jackson led a one-two Texas finish in the 50 freestyle, where he was victorious in 20.52. Van Roekel took second in 20.84.
Freshman Austin Surhoff led a one-two-three Longhorns finish in the 200 individual medley, as he took first in 1:51.62. Junior Bryan Collins followed closely behind in 1:51.95. Freshman Nick D'Innocenzo took third in 1:52.02.
Freshman Drew Livingston led a strong Texas showing in the three-meter diving event, where he edged UT junior Matt Cooper. Livingston took first with 402.60 points, and Cooper took second with 402.15 points. Junior Matt Cardell placed fourth with 335.02 points.
Berens claimed the 100 freestyle in 44.91, and Hill followed in third at 45.25. Wilcox notched his second win of the day in the 500 freestyle in 4:28.71, and Berens chipped in another win in the 100 butterfly in 49.26. Collins led a one-two Texas finish in the 400 IM at 3:58.42. Cooper added a win in the one-meter event with 352.13 points, while Cardell took fourth with 292.28 points.
