TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Texas men's cross country team tied for 28th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday. The Longhorns scored 605 points to tie with Duke. Oklahoma State won the title with 127 points followed by Oregon (143) and Alabama (173).
"The guys have come a long way," assistant coach John Hayes said. "This was a team that didn't qualify for nationals last year and now they are one of the top 30 teams in the country. Considering there are over 300 schools that compete in cross country, that's pretty good."
Senior Habben Berhane led the Horns with a 79th place finish in 30:58. Sophomore Rory Tunningley was second for UT in 102nd place with a time of 31:12. Sophomore Brock Simmons finished 122nd (31:26) followed by juniors Bradley Lowry (146th, 31:41) and Brian Rhodes-Devey (156th, 31:50).
"Our goal was to finish inside the top 25, so we fell a little short of that," Hayes said. "But, I really thought the guys ran a better race than they did at regionals. They've continued to improve from race to race and have set a nice foundation for where we hope to take this program in the future."
Freshman Austin Roth and junior Robert Wetzel also contributed for the Longhorns. Roth placed 197th with a time of 33:05, while Wetzel clocked a 33:29 to place 206th.
