COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The No. 7 Texas men's track and field team claimed its fourth-consecutive Big 12 Indoor Championship and the Longhorns won four individual conference crowns at the Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium on Saturday. The Horns claimed the title by scoring 115 points, bettering Nebraska (102.5) and Texas A&M (84). The victory marked the first time in school history that the Texas men have won four-straight conference indoor titles. In honor of the conference championship, the Tower on UT's campus will be lit orange.
"This is a special moment for men's track and field at Texas," head coach Bubba Thornton said. "Winning four-straight conference championships is a huge accomplishment. It represents the kind of program we've built and the guys who have competed for this university. I couldn't be prouder of this team."
The Longhorns started the day in third place behind Nebraska and Iowa State, but vaulted to the top of the leader board thanks to performances in the middle distances. The Horns scored 55 of their 115 points in the 600 yards, 800m, 1,000m and the mile.
During that span, seniors Tevan Everett and Jacob Hernandez became two of just 14 athletes in Big 12 history to win an individual event three times. Of those 14 athletes, eight of them are Longhorns. Everett claimed his third title in the 600 yards, while Hernandez did it in the 800 meters.
Tevan Everett led a 1-2 finish in the 600 along with twin brother Tevas. A day after setting the school record in the event with a 1:08.51, Tevan posted a 1:08.66 to claim the race. Tevas, who earned All-Big 12 honors in the event his first two seasons before redshirting last year, finished second with a time of 1:09.45.
"It was all about the team for me," Tevan Everett said. "I wanted to do as much as I could, and if that meant tripling, then that's what I was going to do. I'm really proud to be a part of this team because every guy fought and we ended up winning the championship."
Hernandez continued his dominance in the 800 by posting a season-best 1:48.04, which ranks as the nation's third-fastest time and the fastest on a non-oversized track. Senior Mike Carmody added a fifth-place finish in the 800 with a 1:50.55.
"This is really special," Hernandez said. "Being a senior and being the last time I'll run with this team indoors, I was hoping we could win the fourth straight. Everyone did what they needed to do and we had some young guys step up. This is an awesome feeling."
Texas also claimed a 1-2 finish in the 1,000 meters. Freshman Patrick Todd captured his first Big 12 title with a 2:24.52, finishing just ahead of sophomore Logan Gonzales, who clocked a 2:24.86. Senior Kyle Miller placed eighth with a 2:28.13.
Senior Raymond Harris provided another event win by taking the high jump with a clearance of 2.18m (7-1.75), becoming the ninth Longhorn in 13 seasons to claim the indoor conference high jump title. Harris bettered defending champion Scott Sellers of Kansas State, who finished second with a clearance of 2.14m (7-0.25). Sophomore Devon Bond also cleared at 2.14m (7-0.25), but placed third due to misses.
In other events on the track, senior Jake Morse placed fourth in the 3,000 meters (8:06.37) and fifth in the mile (4:06.04), senior Elliot O'Hare took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (7.90) and sophomore Danzell Fortson notched a sixth-place finish in the 400 meters (47.41). In addition, the 4x400-meter relay of Fortson, Hernandez, Tevas Everett and Tevan Everett placed fifth in 3:10.14.
Freshman Jacob Thormaehlen added a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 17.28m (56-8.50). His five points, which came in the second-to-last event of the day, clinched the title for the Longhorns.
Up next, the Longhorns will return to College Station in two weeks to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
