Softball falls to No. 24 Florida State, 2-0, in tourney finale

FULLERTON, Calif. -- The Texas Softball team held No. 24 Florida State to two runs, but failed to score as it fell to the Seminoles, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in its finale at the Judi Garman Classic. Texas' loss dropped the Horns to 20-9 on the season and 3-3 at the tourney, while the Noles improved to 20-8.
Texas sophomore starter Brittany Barnhill (9-5) fired her fourth complete game of the week, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits, while walking four and fanning three. Florida State starter Terese Gober (13-5) picked up the win after throwing a complete game shutout, holding Texas to three hits and striking out 10.
Florida State manufactured its first run in the second, using a leadoff walk by Ashley Stager, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI double by Michelle Snyder to take a 1-0 lead. The Seminoles plated their second run in the fourth courtesy of a leadoff single by Jessica Gilmore and a run-scoring single by Shayla Jackson.
Junior second baseman Loryn Johnson, freshman shortstop Lexy Bennett and freshman rightfielder Courtney Craig each notched a hit in the loss.
Texas returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 when it hosts Houston in a doubleheader at McCombs Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
