AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 13 Texas (16-4) took the doubles point and registered a dominant effort during the singles session, as the Longhorns posted a 7-0 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-8) Thursday evening at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Texas managed to fight off a furious effort from the Islanders to capture the doubles point. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's James Langford and David Pace defeated UT's Jonah Kane-West and Olivier Sajous at third doubles, but the Longhorns took the remaining matches at the second and first positions to clinch the doubles point.
UT juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala hung on at second doubles for a 9-8 tiebreak win over the Islanders' Laurent Montoisy and Jose Zunino, and sophomores Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico dealt Mikhail Pavlov and Dmitry Novikov a 9-7 defeat at the first slot.
Texas quickly pushed its lead to 3-0 with victories at the third and first singles positions. Damico finished off Novikov by a 6-1, 6-3 count at third singles, and Kutrovsky dealt Mikhail Pavlov a 6-1, 6-3 defeat at the first slot. Zavala fought his way to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jaume Farras at fifth singles to clinch the victory for the Longhorns.
Corrie tacked on to the Texas lead with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Montoisy at second singles, and Sajous, after trailing 7-4 in a third-set super-tiebreaker, posted a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win at the fourth slot over Zunino to extend the lead to 6-0.
UT junior Jon Wiegand outlasted the Islanders' James Langford in a lengthy three-set match, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-1) to close out the match.
"I thought this was one of our most complete performances of the season," UT coach Michael Center said. "A&M-Corpus played us really well in the doubles and then our guys got after them quickly in the singles matches. I'm pleased with our effort."
Texas meets Texas A&M on Thursday, April 16 in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Central at A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
